just setup a 36 HP stem boiler how many fermenters and stills are required to keep it running?

1 fermenter, 1 still is enough when the boiler if fully up to temp, 2 stills is better, specially when the boiler is on its less efficient warm up phase.

I have a 36LP and a 36HP boiler, both being fed by a fermenter with 2 stills, and I have excess biomass/biofuel. Initially there was 1 still, but when I added the 36HP boiler my biofuel tank started to empty.

ETA: I actually had a sapling supply issue at one stage before I fixed the chunkloading in my base (and started stopping the server when not online - some stuff was loading but some wasn't), so the biomass ran out which caused the still to be not working for a while, this is why I added a 2nd still once I got the sapling situation sorted, to catch up again.

thanks ended up putting 1 fermenter and 6 stills to keep it supplyed it was only 200C now its almost up to temp il just remove 4 of them when it hits 1000C

Here is a funny side question. Is it needed to make the mass into fuel or can one just use the mass in a HP boiler?

http://railcraft.wikispaces.com/Steam+Boiler+(Device)

Solid

  • Nearly anything that burns in a Furnace may be used to feed a Solid Fuel Firebox.
  • Bucket of Lava = 1000
  • Charcoal = 1600
  • Forestry Peat = 1600
  • Coal = 3200
  • Coal Coke = 6400

Liquid

  • Lava is not a valid liquid fuel, this is intentional.
  • Creosote Oil = 3200
  • Forestry Bio-Fuel = 32000
  • BuildCraft Fuel = 96000

So.. going by the Wiki article (and I will readily admit potential accuracy errors in any unofficial Wiki data), Biofuel has 400% greater energy density than Biomass. Running Biomass through a Refinery to create Biofuel only benefits you by effectively compressing the liquid down but keeping the same energy yield. Running Biomass through a Still yields a greater ratio of Biofuel, giving you a greater yield in energy after the compression process. Option 3 is to convert the stuff in a Distiilation Tower (GregTech) which apparently yields the best conversion ratio (but I'm not a fan of GregTech stuff).

Basically.. if you've got crap tons of space for storage tanks and you DON'T want to use GregTech equipment.. don't worry about converting Biomass to Biofuel. At least.. that's my take-away from it.

Well I am going to make a HP boiler later on so I will make a still to make bio fuel. More fuel engines to make too. That is fine. Really first time I am getting heavy into any tech mod. I have all the TC stuff learned and have Factorization all set up for my ore. An Infernal Furnace for food making. Yeah it is good.

Don't use fermenter/stills for biofuel. In 1.5 it'll be almost worthless to use standard saplings and it's a terribly slow process. It's best to use a bio reactor(No power needed) supplied with 9 different types of seeds(flax and xycraft both work)/saplings(both rubber types work haven't tried other mod saplings)/potatos/cocoa/carrots. It will produce 1440 mB of biofuel using one of each item. It will produce biofuel as quickly as it can be pumped out. Currently I believe the fastest method are liquiducts which pump 1 bucket every 100 ticks. If fully supplied a bio reactor can maintain 2 36 HP boilers both at heatup phase and still produce excess biofuel.

What is this Bio Reactor you speak of? I cannot find any information on it in the Wiki.

The HP boiler at max temp uses one bucket every 1 minute and 40 seconds, and will use about 696~ buckets of biofuel to heat up, if the wiki didn't lie to me.

But, what Hoff said. If you have access to the MFR Bio Reactor, use it. If not, oh well. Get into tree breeding, I suppose.

Sengir has posted here to the effect that there will be config settings to return the original values if you really want to.
