*Not an official FTB help desk document. I work Tech support real life. Please feel free to ask for help for FTB issues*

So, here we go. This should solve most of the issues that people are having with the FTB launcher not working, or you getting errors with the different mod-packs. This list is not all inclusive, and you will still have issues, but if you follow these steps, ALL OF THEM, then if you do still have problems, it will be an actual problem with the launcher/mod-pack, and not with how you installed it.

Notice, some of these steps are different from the official FTB help desk steps/instructions. This does not make these steps better or worse, just a different approach. Click the spoiler to find out why they are different.

It is because FTB realizes that some people are not so smart, so they dumb things down. I expect you to know how to do certain things, or to to search Google if you have an issue. If after looking yourself, feel free to ask me how to do something. I will update this posts if many people start asking the same question.

  • Remove ALL FTB related files from your computer. Please feel free to back up any worlds you want to save before this.
    • In the %appdata% folder...
      • .minecraft (This is the vanilla Minecraft folder, you don't need to remove this one)
      • ftblauncher (This is where the Launcher settings are saved. Delete it.)
    • The FTB folder currently on your computer. I don't know where you put it. Delete it.
    • The FTB_Launcher file you downloaded from the website. The .exe or the .jar. Delete this also.
  • So did you do all of that? Are you sure?
  • Open the command prompt, and type the following: (This creates a folder on the hard drive.)
Code:
MKDIR C:\Minecraft
  • Go to http://feed-the-beast.com/and download the launcher. I would use the "Download (jar)", but if you want to, then use the "Download (exe)"
  • Did it ask you where to save the file? Then save it to the C:\Minecraft folder we just made. If it did not ask you where to download it, go to your download folder and move it to the C:\Minecraft folder you just made.
  • Now, right click on the the file you just downloaded and select "Create shortcut". Now put that shortcut onto the desktop. Feel free to rename the shortcut to whatever you want. I renamed mine "FTB Rules!"
  • So, we have the launcher downloaded into a folder on the C:\Minecraft.
  • So now start the game from the shortcut on the desktop. You should get a popup asking you where to set the install directory.
    • IF YOU DO NOT GET THIS POPUP, go choke yourself and start form the beginning of this post, because you did something wrong. If you do get the popup, just click apply, and we shall carry on.
  • Now the launcher should actually open for you, along with the Console. First thing first, create your profile. No, i'm not going to walk you through that. NOTICE, you actually need a for real paid for Minecraft account. If you don't have one, go choke yourself.
  • Go to the options tab. Can you set the "RAM Maximum" slider above 1GB? No? Close out the launcher, and go uninstall your Java, and re-install the latest Java from the Java website. Install the "Windows Offline (64-bit)".
    • Before you download and install Java, check if your computer is x64 (64 bit) or x84 (32 bit)
    • Follow this link to find out how to do that.
    • If your computer is 32bit, then uninstall it and reinstall anyways. Makes sure you're updated that way.
  • Now that the correct latest and greatest Java is installed, you need to set your Java parameters. Please see THIS POST for some wonderful settings that I am not going to re-create here.
  • With me so far?
  • Select your mod pack and click launch. Your computer should be downloading the Mod-pack, and then the Minecraft files, and your game should start. Now onto how to get what we need when things go wrong.
  1. Close FTB and when you reopen it, go to the console and in the bottom, change the drop down box from "Minimal" to "Debug". No console? Check the "Show Console" box in the options tab in FTB, and then restart FTB. Change this to debug before re-launching the mod-pack.
  2. This step is a little difficult to explain, because I don't know what your issue is. But basically you want to recreate the problem as quickly as possible in Minecraft. Why quickly? So we (I) don't have to read a massive log that contains a bunch of information we (I) don't need.
  3. Now that we know the problem is not a one time deal, basically because you recreated it, now you need to find out if it is something we can actually help you with, or if we are going to go tell you to choke yourself.
  4. Now you can ask for help. You need to ask in a specific way, or you will be told to go choke yourself. Both the information posted behind THIS LINK, or what is below, will work. Take your pick
Needed Information and how to ask for help
  • Logs. We can do nothing without logs. Logs need to be posted to pastebin.com There is a reason for this. We do not like reading a wall of text. I will not read a wall of text, and somebody (most likely me) will tell you to post on pastebin. Is the file to big for pastebin? Then take a couple seconds a make a free account. Under no condition will I anymore open attachments here on the forums unless you are known. If you have an alternative to pastebin, feel free to use that instead. I'm using the unleashed as an example, your mod-pack choice might vary.
  • These are the log's we might need:
    • In the "C:\Minecraft" folder
      • MinecraftLog.txt
    • In the "C:\Minecraft\Unleashed\minecraft" Folder
      • ForgeModLoader-client-0.log
      • output-client.log
      • output-server.log
    • In the "C:\Minecraft\Unleashed\minecraft\crash-reports"
      • crash-(Date of crash)_(Time of crash)-client.txt
      • This log is what shows us why you crashed. Is your game not crashing? Then hold the "F3" and "C" key at the same time to force Minecraft to crash.
  • The log below is the log we will need, no matter what you say. Exactly this file, not modified, shortened, or directly pasted into the forums.
    • In the "C:\Minecraft" folder
      • FTBLauncherLog.txt
      • THIS IS THE CONSOLE LOG! END OF STORY! WITHOUT THIS YOU WILL NOT GET HELP!
Did I tell you about that Console log? BECAUSE WE CAN"T HELP YOU IF YOU DON'T GET IT TO US.

Now, feel free to post you questions and ask for help. To get my attention, just coye this code into the bottom of your first post. It will also show me that you followed all these steps and I will not need to tell you to choke yourself. :)

Code:
[quote="Booker The Geek, member: 34454"]
BookerTheGeek, I read your post and followed your steps, but I still need help.
I have the Console log and crash report posted to pastebin like you asked.
Please come help. :)[/quote]

THIS FILE, "FTBLauncherLog.txt" IS THE CONSOLE LOG!
END OF STORY!
WITHOUT THIS YOU WILL NOT GET HELP!
Common Problem #1 (Critical error in destination folder) Original Post
This is a Forge issue, not FTB. PLEASE go bug forge after you follow this and fix your problem.
Very important:
Rename the files to bcprov-jdk15on-148.jar and scala-library.jar.
If you put the .stash files it won't work.
Remove that .stash

Great thread. (Can't wait for a moderator to sticky it). Also, I have an idea you could add: write some common errors Minecraft will put in the log when it crashes. Eg.: if a mod says 'ID x is being overwritten by y' then it means there's a problem with the config file, etc.
Anyway, good idea for making such a thread, hopefuly if people read this there won't be any more people saying something like "on noes, plz help, wats dat 'a log' ?". Really bad way to ask for help...

Great thread. (Can't wait for a moderator to sticky it).
Won't happen. Not an "official" guide. Also, as Booker says, we need to keep all official guidance dumbed-down to the lowest possible level.
I'd love to have it stickied, but as he said, it's based on users having SOME knowledge, and the vast majority do not, or they have the wrong knowledge.

Officially, Tech Support will not use this as a reference tool, since it's not simple enough :p And has points where it calls people out for doing stuff wrong ;)

Really amazing post though :)

Thank you! And good Idea, if you have any ideas, on common errors then I will add them. I was planning on adding some that I run into often.

True, I'm a bit of a smart ass. ;) And true, not an official helpful guide, nothing stopping people from putting a link in there sig thou, right?

Also, for people who posted below the guides, I might ask you to past some texts if the first two get to long. :)
