it's not that I really need more then 60FPS, I was just wondering how people are able to reach such high FPS and what they've done to reach such a high FPS
I always play at 40FPS myself, but I was kind of bummed I only reached about 200FPS max on my new system

also remember it's poorly coded (thanks notch) and has no multi core support without optifine (which as far as I know only gives multi-core support for chunk loading anyway so)

Is that on a "rigged" world? Most of the really high FPS I've seen people report probably come from Flat Minecraft worlds in Creative or Peaceful. Or maybe they spent multiple thousands buying/putting together their computer?

It's not just money; it's the know-how to get every ounce of speed out of their components.
i5 OC @4.1ghz and z77 motherboard- $375
GTX 770 - $340
Crucial SSD $178
12GB DDR3 RAM - $100 total for 4 sticks (4x2 and 2x2)

Total expenditure = $993. This setup gets me 70ish FPS in FTB/RR using a x64 Sphax texture pack. In vanilla Minecraft I can push 300-400 FPS for standard worlds.

While multicore isn't supported directly by MC at least they appear to be making small steps forward... According to one of the 1.8 snapshot videos (SethBling, I think) at least the End and the Nether will be running in seperate threads from the overworld and each other when 1.8 is released.

hmm, k, lemme try that out...

ok, I'll be right back, I need to go change my pants...
that's on a flat overworld world, in 1.7.4 with fast graphics, 2 chunk render distance, smooth lighting off, max framerate, particles minimal and vsync off

so it seems I've had this kind of computer all along, but I just didn't do the right tests...

I was just really bummed when I didn't get a good high FPS on my new computer, when I thought I'd get a very high FPS
but now I know I can get a high FPS, giving me a feeling I didn't waste my money on a bad system...

though I'll still play at 40FPS, I've been playing at 40 for so long now, I've gotten completely used to it

1.6 optimized a whole load of code.
1.7 optimized even more.
1.8 is looking to optimize EVEN MORE code.

Don't say it's poorly coded; it's not anymore. Was back in beta, but since Notch stopped working on MC to work on other projects, it's gotten a lot better.

Keep in mind that Minecraft was never destined to become one tenth as popular as it is, it was mostly Notch's way of practicing Java until the internet found it.

That's no excuse, you should write all code as if the person maintaining it is a psychopath who knows where you live.

Not true. I have a gaming laptop and it does, indeed, do serious gaming. No, it doesn't have the power of the top-of-of-the-line desktop, but it has enough to run anything you throw at it at max setting or nearly max settings. It certainly runs Minecraft very well.
.

Yeah good luck upgrading that or fixing it cheaply. While many laptops can play games that doesn't mean they're optimal for gaming. I've upgraded hardware and been able to fix single components myself for the 3 years I've had my self-built PC. In that time not only have I spent less than $1000 on it, but I've never had to get it repaired at a shop and I've managed to keep it as powerful as ever.

When I play Minecraft from Linux, my client is very slow. It might be the Linux video card drivers, OpenGL library, Java, or all the above. Mileage likely varies with the MC Linux client, but my experience was not good.

However, when I play with the same hardware on Windows 7, my client is pretty fast. My wife's iMac is also pretty fast when playing MC.
