efficiency means a lot. less efficient PSUs create more heat for your machine to dissipate, and higher power bills. a gold rated PSU isn't that much more, and honestly, PSU isn't something you should skimp on. I've seen failed PSU take out all 3 mobo, CPU, and gpu.

I've spent thousands of dollars because of failed/failing PSUs, and I don't take chances anymore.

You would be correct. There are only a few brands of PSU that I trust personally.

You'd be surprised how much money I've spent due to my own bad choices on computer hardware. I only know what I know due to mistakes I've made in the past.

yep, basically that's about it.

but I'll spend $20 more on a PSU if it will end up saving me $100 in the long run in power bills.

Well to be honest, the efficiency of the PSU isn't super important if you don't keep the computer on all the time.

It depends on how you look at it. Every minute it is on, you're just wasting power in the form of heat.

The way I see it, If it only costs $20 extra to save you more than that in the lifetime of your PSU, why not?
