Just started a new map on this mod pack. A buddy and me head out west. We get to about -2500 and hit ocean, ok make a few boats, let's go for a ride and see what's out there... -250000 nothing but micro islands so far. Just turned north.

Where's the land?

It seems to be quite common. Iv started 5 worlds looking for massive land and I only get different sized islands!

I believe it's a bug in the terrain generation, or maybe it's something adjusted by BoP.

The old world my server was on had an ocean that extended for 25 million blocks, with no sight of land anywhere. Going in one direction, no circles.

If you don't select the Biomes o' Plenty world type when you create your world, the terrain generation is pretty close to vanilla- there's a lot of land, but also some very large oceans. If I'm not mistaken, BoP does more or less the same thing- although the biomes covering the continents will be different.

My guess is that you just got bad luck with random number generation.

If you're really desperate for land, you could try making random Mystcraft ages (surely there's some sugarcane on those islands). With recent updates, they're now MUCH less likely to fall apart; and as Ocean is one biome of many (especially with BoP and Twilight Forest), you're probably not too likely to get it.

If you can get leather. Hmm...

You could see how well the low terrain and eternal dimness of the Twilight Forest works for Survival Multiplayer with tech mods.

the endless ocean thing is vanilla terrain gen gone bad. it happens more or less constantly. there is far less land now than there used to be. most of my vanilla gen worlds seem to rarely give me more than one to three biomes per "continent" and continents are much smaller than they used to be as well, I rarely get any big enough to take more than a mc day or two to cross. BOP adds more biome types, so it seems to me that i get a better land ratio when enabling everything it has to offer.

It is difficult to get past some of the seas indeed. The best way I've found is to equip yourself with a jetpack (and optionaly an enderchest-based remote charger) and fly all the way across it. It is usually much faster and easier to see the land from high up

The largest Ocean I've encountered was 50k blocks. When I'm exploring and I encounter an ocean I go in a stairway pattern and hope I hit land soon.

Another thing: If you can get your hands on a map (or, better yet, a Magic Map from the Twilight Forest), you should be able to see much farther than even the "Far" rendering distance will allow.

If I'm not mistaken, the Magic Map has longer range than the vanilla map. Harder to get if you've never been to the Twilight Forest, of course, as you need Glowstone as well as two TF items...

I've created a magic map centered on spawn in my current test world, with Plenty o' Biomes enabled...

That's more ocean than I thought there was. Even flying around with full a MPS flight suit, it's a big ocean. I'm not entirely certain how much continent (or ocean, for that matter) isn't shown on this map.

Yeah, that seems to be how it works these days with vanilla terrain generation. The last two servers I played on with vanilla terrain generation had oceans that went on for longer than I could care to figure out.

Simple advice is to start a new map if your spawn is an ocean

I am quite confident that nothing has really been changed in Minecraft in terms of making it so there is more ocean since the ocean biome was added to the game. I use to use a mapping program for MC called AMIDST which shows you a map of any seed you care to check out without needing to enter the game. And using AMIDST now I am seeing pretty much identical results in terms of continent sizes and frequency as I did back then. In fact if anything it seems like there is less ocean then there use to be from the seeds I have looked at.

But for anyone wondering, BOP mod does not add more land then in vanilla MC. It merely coverts the locations of where vanilla biomes would have generated and adds random chances for other biomes to spawn in there place. This can be confirmed by using the AMIDST program using vanilla and then the unleashed mod and you will see that the seeds are identical. The AMIDST program will not show the BOP biome colors however, but wherever you see a vanilla land biome you will find a land biome using the BOP mod.

As a suggestion, if you are desperate for a seed with more land then I recommend using the AMIDST program to quickly input different seeds (I recommend simple seeds like 1-100 just to make it easier) to see which ones put you further inland or on larger continents. That way you don't have to waste time exploring in game just to find out if it is to your liking in terms of land to water ratio.
