Upon players joining my server they experience intense latency on near everything they do, most report at least 15-30 seconds between dropping a block with Q and it appearing in the world and get killed my mobs that they can not fight back.
After a good few minutes the lag passes and the the player runs smoothly.

I am using FTB Ultimate server on my home PC (i5-3570k @4.3Ghz w/ 8GB RAM) with the launch code "-Xms512M -Xmx1G" and often play on the server myself (GTX670 GPU) along with up to 4 people. It doesn't seem to matter what i am doing on my PC, whether it be nothing or Crysis, the server has exactly the same issues.

My bandwidth is quite low (2-4Mb/s Down 400-600Kb/s Up)

I used to run a vanilla server on my 7 year old laptop with around 8 people on consistently with no issues what so ever.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue or has any idea how to resolve the issue? I am a technically experienced individual but can not get my head around this other than it being my upload capacity being maxed out when uploading the world chunks to the players when they first join. But why is this only occurring now and never occurred on my old vanilla server on awful hardware and a vastly explored world?

If nobody knows how to resolve this then I will get to monitoring everything about my PC and the server to try and pinpoint the problem and post any results and fixes I might find myself.

Thanks.

tldr; players LAG when they first join my small ultimate server: WHY??

(2-4Mb/s Down 400-600Kb/s Up) Sounds like that may be your problem, you even said it yourself :3 Also a server log could be of use if we could dig something out of there.

True, true. My bandwidth sucks, it winds me up no end.

But why now? Why not on my old laptop's server? I had even less upload then, i hadn't optimised the line at all. Is FTB more intensive on bandwidth?

I'll start monitoring my bandwidth and server and run some lil in game stress tests with and without players and such.

thanks

Yes.

A lot.

Well... that sucks and doesn't make much sense to me, the actual world is very very similar, a good 90% of the blocks are still stone and dirt and i don't see where the performance hit difference lies, the difference between telling someone a block is Iron or Thaumium doesn't seem logical.

But if that is the case then there is nothing i can do. I just tested a vanilla server and it runs smooth as i could like... I suppose we will have to play on another server until i get Fibre Optic some time this year... That sucks.

Thanks for the help.

Shameless self advertising, but if you head to the server promotion area and casual servers, you can find some small servers (including mine :3) that run ultimate

FTB uses an average of about 200kb/s per person on the server for packet handling, and i have personally seen spikes up to 1.6mb/s.
