In ALL of my years of video games, starting at the age of 3 with Sonic, out of the hundreds of games I have played, I have NEVER encountered an enemy more annoying than Creepers. There's NO enemy in any other game I've played that's capable of setting you back to practically nothing in just a few seconds. It's unreal how frigging destructive and counterproductive they are. I got sick of Creepers so I took literally 6 stacks of sulfur torches and spammed them in the mile radius around my house. It's nice and quiet now. And yes, the creepers were made by someone extremely sadistic.

Most of my favorite memories and stories to relay are about the creeper attacks - after the initial bout of tourettes <sp> is over I usually have a good laugh about it, and come out better in the end.

Three times my current base has been hit - one time taking out some barrels and my sorting machine wiring; I now have a smaller, easier to maintain sorting system thanks to that, and I found the hole they got in from.

I still don't do terribly well mob-proofing my bases, because I don't like the look of torch spam and haven't yet made enough wrath lamps.

What I want to build for my base, is a combination of the Steampunk Bdubs has, the Magic Docm has, and the awesome factory style Arkas has. I hate the torch spam all over my base, and how utterly disorganized it is at the moment.

In my last creeper attack, one of those f*ers got in trough the god damn chimney. I have no idea how it got there. He sure as hell couldn't have spawned there as it's build from microblocks. But the thing is that I'm not using the fireplace... since the fire. And well, it goes all the way down to the boiler room. There's just a block tall opening in my work room, I've got some project tables in front of the hole.

And he somehow managed to explode while falling down trough the chimney.

Needless to say, I was bloody pissed, items everywhere. Lost my enchanted goggles due to a bug while space-clicking my stuff into diamond chests.

There's a grate in the chimney now. I also filled a half a creeper soul shard the following nights.

I have a tier 5 creeper soul shard that I decided to make after every one of my machines (Including mass fabricator and an ultimate solar panel) were blown up some time ago. I tested it and oh god.. It's terrifying. Granted, it doesn't scare me with Quantum+Gravichest, but I don't want to get too close to them because I hate having to repair the landscape they destroy.

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
If you guys are getting creepers in your house- then you're doing it wrong.

I have no front doors (no fences either), and my area isn't fully lit up. Until very recently there was thick forest right next door.
I had one slightly damaging creeper attack, and a few close calls- but nothing too bad.
Living in a cave before this- few creepers in my engine/machine/store room, fairly easy to deal with- even with an iron sword and no bow.

You do realize you sound like an ass right? Just figured I should point that out. All you're doing is "Hay, I'm better than you because I haven't had creeper problems"

Yeah. torch spam is ugly. I'd rather deal with the odd mob here and there, creepers can't bash down doors, so keeping them out of your vital areas aren't all that hard.
Luckily we have other ways of getting our towns and industrial complexes lit up in FTB than just torches.

The way I do it is a little strange, but it works for me. I start off in the world by finding a nice cave, sealing it off, and lighting it up with torches before making my base there. I live there for a few weeks (Literally, I've lived in this cave to the point that I've made all the parts for a fusion reactor) and then set off to find a nice spot. Then I build a massive (and good looking, mind you) base before moving everything over! ^_^ Creepers are not a problem, because I've got a torch every 3 blocks xD It doesn't look pretty, but it gets the job done.

Haaa actually I start off the same way as you do except I dig myself a little hole in the ground, get iron for a bucket or two for infinite water, make a small underground farm and live like a hermit with my pet turtle Frank until I'm comfty enough to see the bright open world (i tunnel to a nice place lol) and fencetorch the whole area until I have wrathlamps.
Honestly tho, I swear fences are one of the most overlooked and underused anti-creeper|zombie barrier.

it is not the creeper blowing up that makes it bad.

And it they come out of nowhere not becuase of some clever AI or specail trolly coding.

They are the only mob in the game that has no ambint sounds. They don't make noise when they walk. Out in the overworld they green blends in well with a lot of the background.

When you do hear them it normally is to late unless your not in any menus or invtory screens and fast on the keys.

They do have footstep sounds. I think?

Not that I know of. HissBOOM is the only warning I've ever got. Well, except the rare times when they Geronimo off a ledge high enough to take damage.

I'll often live in a desert as it makes spotting creepers fairly easy. Of course, if it is dark enough, and you are tired enough, you may mistake them for cactuses. If you are really tired, you make think it is a Cactuar (Final Fantasy) or Pokey (Mario), in which case you likely should get some sleep.

Ah...they do make little noise so I normally am able to avoid them when out exploring the sounds is hard to explain but it sounds like a tiny pitter patter.

Yeah, I'm fairly certain that they have step sounds, just different and muted.

TESTED: with gravel - footsteps normal. With grass - don't hear nothing.

Be that as it may you rarely hear one before you see it. It is this fact that maks them apear out of now where. And when your distacted makes them seem to show up at the worst times... beuase your distracted by your poject.

I came to a conclusion. I'm paranoid or I have weird creeper senses (more than likely paranoid).

Na... just means you play the game on something other then peaceful.

Anyone that has planed MC for more then a few months on normal or hard difficuly gets a 'feel' for mobs. You just start to get an idea of the spawning system and become aware of your safety bubble and light levels.
