cool mods that arent already in mod packs

Some of the youtubers I watch are playing a pack from another launcher. The most interesting mod that I haven't seen in FTB packs is Dragon Mounts. http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/827863-17x-dragon-mounts-r37-wip/.

Pixelmon looks like it could be fun, even for those of us who were never into Pokemon, but it also looks like it may not play well with mod-packs & would have to have a pack designed around it if you want additional mods.

If you wanted to check the 1.7 modded MC scene, but held out since you are waiting for helper mods like Factorisation or Extra Utilities to be ported first, you should meanwhile take the plunge using the Random things mod, which is "spiritually similar". I first discovered the mod via "faster leaf decay" in the monster pack. It is just fantastic So, yes, it is included in a few FTB packs already, so it is "technically" not the right answer, but it is not part of the ftb 1.7 pack.

Well the 1.7 version is a rewrite so it mainly contains different features then the 1.6 one. The most useful ones stayed.
