@The Mobius Archives might have been referring to an alternative definition of "Sod", meaning Idiot or Fool. So where "Dirt Sod" in one context sounds redundant, in another context it does make some sense with a "Sod" being pretty much the bottom rung of the social ladder.

It's actually pretty hard to make a real dirt structure stable. Even mud structures require semi-constant repairs and maintenance. Not saying they're not livable (in fact the thermal mass makes them quite nice to live in generally), just saying "hut" is a petty accurate descriptor.

Also: Hi Maul! Long time no see :)

Uh. Dirt Hole (referencing the fox holes they dug during wars)? I've been gone doing art school. You can see what I did in the class I just finished on my dA profile (search for bubblybunnybash). Now I'm moving on to a human study class called life drawing. There are 6 total human - focused classes (life drawing I - IV and life painting I - II). I'll try to censor as much as possible, but no promises.

This means it'll be a while before I can get back to building with you (have 5 get my computer fixed anyway). At least when I start again you should no longer hear any cats in heat because we finally got them fixed thanks to some very kind people in organizations dedicated to helping animals. So when I do come back there shouldn't be any constant mewls.

I've been going back through the pages during my absence, to take notes on your comments, and see if there's any good advice I can pick up, and I have to say:

I could kiss you, Mobius. You found an archived version of the old wiki. Right now, it's a PITA to edit out the Page numbers, let alone remember how the formatting went, since I apparently have put my old .pdf backup somewhere I cannot find, and I don't know which post I had that had either a link to the download for the PDF or straight up download from the post itself.

https://web.archive.org/web/2014022.../Refugee+to+Regent+Kingdom+Building+Challenge

That's gonna be very helpful. Gonna go edit this into the OP.

EDIT: he said, going to the OP and seeing that the backup was posted there. However, upon attempting to download the zip file, it apparently didn't work properly. odd.

Secondly, @TomeWyrm if it's okay with you, I'd like to use a bit of a rant you did a few pages back (originally about mods, mod ownership, and licenses), as basically the defining piece of "Rule of Cool" stuff in the OP and the wiki. Because I think it encapsulates the philosophy I have in mind for the challenge almost perfectly. It's not the EXACT quote from your post, because I edited out direct references to mods:

I could care less about official. I've gotten over the drama llamas in the community. CONTENT is what's important, not This Particular Authors Vision Of The Content. Copyright is well and good, IP rights are nice, but frankly people need to get over [it]...and get back into the cathedral. This community needs it.

--Tomewyrm, originally on mods, but nicely sums up my goals for this Challenge.

Further back in time.....

But the point of life drawing is to get an understanding of the human anatomy as an artist. If you can't draw all the underneath bits, the over-top bits can easily look off. Besides, if you scan them, you can blur the "naughty" bits with GIMP/Photoshop (which you don't have to do on DA, they have maturity ratings for a reason :p)

@Maul_Junior Go for it, I'd probably use something more like this:

"I don't care overly much about official rules. Too much drama and angst sometimes. CONTENT is what's important, not That Particular Person's Vision. Authorial intent is important, but frankly people need to get over it and get back into the cathedral. This community needs it."

The link to the explanation of "cathedral" in this case should probably be there if you use that term. It's far from common usage :)

Yes, but you'd be surprised at how many people get butt hurt even when the image is marked 18+

In my honest opinion? Shoot them out an airlock. I'd give my ACTUAL opinion, but this *is* supposed to be a family friendly forum, fill in your curse words of choice, but be creative about it for the sake of my reputation if nothing else :p

If you warn people and they get butthurt, it's THEIR problem.

I have a long-running world I've been tinkering with for a while. Think I started in 1.8, with only an auto-fishing mod (I hate vanilla fishing with a fiery passion), inventory tweaks, and Custom NPCs. I'm down to Custom NPCs atm.

Spent a bit of time on it today, thought I'd share it with you.

So first off, we have the village that I've put the most work into. Right now it has 2 golems, and underground pastures for all types of livestock. I've got a decent supply of black and gray rabbits, sheep (just finished the underground sheep pen today, actually), pigs, and cows. I have a horse or two and a donkey in an ugly building that are tamed. I used to be able to grow carrots here, but after realizing that the doors I was using to keep the livestock in were actually being opened by Testificates and releasing my animals, I have a substantial wild rabbit, cow, and sheep problem.

kCfyvnY.png

This village hasn't changed much since this picture was taken. Oh, sure, I have another Custom NPC wandering around, and there are a couple Testificates that are apparently stuck on the building behind Steph, but by and large, aside from the absence of carrots, it remains largely the same.

Yes, Village 2 is a lame name. But it's the second village I found, and I haven't bothered to get a better name for it when there are only 2 villagers there and it's a long way to go to build stuff for them right now, when I have other projects.

Amongst them building Altaria out to reach the massive mouth of a cave system, which will be the town mine (I don't have a screenshot atm, but it looks really cool, from a distance).

I currently have 3 villages (with Testificates) atm. There is this one that is pictured, Village 2, and a desert village that borders a Mesa biome that I discovered during a world tour to gather all types of trees.

Gonna need to do another one now, to find beets.

I have a place for my Personal Estate, which I founded when I discovered a natural cave with a one-tile lava flow. It has slowly grown since then. It is by far the most developed area of this world. It also borders what I thought was a lake. So I built a birch boat today to see what was on the other side of the lake, and started out. And kept going. and going. and going.

.......only to stop when, on nearly a direct line out from my Estate, I came across an Ocean Temple. I decided then and there that I would be founding a new Outlier there, composed entirely of a fleet of boats, in the vein of the old Chinese exploration fleets. Trees, food, everything they needed would be produced there. Hell, maybe even some livestock.
vptVLIA.png

This is the first of the boats, and is centered over the top of the Temple, which nearly reaches the surface (~3-5 blocks or so at its highest point). I have not ever ventured into one yet, so I'm super excited to try one out (and get some sponges!)

ngRkepV.png

So here's the first ship in the Atlantian Flotilla. It's got some logs, a bed, some wool, seeds, dirt, and not much else. It's not much more than a raft right now, but that will eventually change. I need to run some saplings out there. But the fun part about this thing is just barely obscured by the chest:

3eJ4Xwi.png

I have provided for direct access to the Temple itself, and easy ability to climb out of the water.

And, finally, my Estate complex.

8F3tcwT.png

Looking in from the ocean at my dock/mooring platform, you can see my tree harvesting schema in the background. I have found that 2x2 Spruce Trees produce the most logs and saplings of any vanilla tree. So I have 3 rows of 2x2 Spruce Trees that can shot up ~40+ blocks, at least. I actually have a whole Tree Row, with room for growing all trees, from Oak to Dark Oak to Jungle trees. Don't have any good shots of it here today.

Needless to say, my Wood Settlement has plenty of torches and charcoal.

........I think I may have a problem.

There is something so satisfying and so zen about systematically chopping down 20+ 40-60-block tall Spruce Trees. I can't explain it.

raxIqRi.png

This is the view from the very top of the Spruce Tree platform. It overlooks my out-going path. to my immediate left (not pictured) is the small hill/cave where I first sheltered. The sign proclaiming that it is mine still hangs above the door......I still haven't done much with the cave itself. Though the cave was originally part of a cave system, which is now blocked off. And has sort of become a mushroom farm, because I planted a couple in the cramped confines of the cave, and have spread throughout the blocked-off cave system.

Further to the left (also, not pictured) is what used to be my wheat/carrot/potato/pumpkin/melon farms. These days I can't keep carrots in the ground because here, too, I made a decided effort to breed up rabbits, and now they've overrun the damn place. Also cows. I didn't have enough leather, now they're everywhere. But because leather has a bit more utility than rabbit drops, I don't mind the cows so much.

.....also the banners used to be Custom NPCs lamps until a 1.7-1.8 upgrade. that, or a 1.8 version change. don't remember which at this point. But they still produce light. Go figure. In the top right of the screenshot, you will see the unfinished portion of a Watchtower, keeping an eye over my mine, which is hidden by the hill.

skwtPHI.png

And, lastly, this is looking back from the Watchtower perchy. You can see both the Spruce Tree harvest framework sprouting up above the hill, as well as the Lumberyard just to its left.

At the intersection in the path with the chests, you might be able to make out the (currently closed) mine, and my Mine Foreman standing guard.

I love this little valley, and it will soon fill up with the homes of miners, mineral storage facilities, smelteries (in the sense of furnaces. Again, just Custom NPCs atm), and more.

Next time I'll take a few more pictures, but this is what I have now.

Good grief, maul! You've been busy! Now that my computer's fixed I think I'll try a vanilla game with some of the newer stuff and see where I get to in my challenge.

that's ~2 years worth of stuff there, Monarch :p

Recently when I load it up all I do is harvest resources, breed cows and rabbits, etc.

......also, I'm totally making a giant carrot-farming ship out near the Temple eventually, far away from any rabbits (aside from the one that is one of my boats).

............may have lost yesterday's work due to a "ticking player" crash I keep getting.

though I still have the backup from my 1.9 update (yesterday). No Atlantian Flotilla, and a bunch of other stuff got lost :(

EDIT: Okay, got a platform up over the Temple again. This time it's moored to the top of the Temple itself, and will serve as the locus for the Atlantian Flotilla.

Got the Sheep pen and Cow pen mined out, though I need to put stairs into the cow area, and I have a half dozen cows and sheep in their underground pens, as well as a half dozen or so chickens.

On top of the 30-50 rabbits and ~50 pigs I've got down there, I've got a pretty good start on livestock.

Checking in on the horses that I have, I have 1 horse and 2 donkeys. I'm going to take the Donkeys and set them up somewhere as a sort of Fallout 3-esque Caravan route.

Don't have slimeballs atm so no leads :(

Let's see......oh, right, also set up my port again in my Estate again. it's basically a dock with docking facilities for 9 boats (2 of each kind of wood, 3 Spruce boats), kept from drifting off (most of them from moving at all) with trap doors.

Also, I've begun sorting all the stone, all the types of dirt, iron, and coal into an area near my mine, where I will be constructing a storage building for it all. Right now it's just a bunch of haphazard chests marked with item frames.

Along the same note, I'm going to be building a granary in Altaria because the double chest I was using is waaaaaaaaaaaay too small for all the food.

.....and apparently I named Village 2 "Wololo."

......also the desert/mesa clay/sand harvesting village "Rogan," because I'm the kind of nerd who likes to make Age of Empires (1) references that practically nobody these days will get.

So today is apparently my one-year anniversary of joining you guys here. Huh.

Also seems I've been quiet over the course of this year.

Does anyone have a reccomended Technic modpack for this challenge? One with a little of magic and tech and custom npc.
