I think he left.

Anyway, I'm still plugging along with Rotarycraft in the pack, trying to see if I've got the oregen properly balanced. Currently it feels like I'm constantly searching for iron, not because I can't find it, but because the recipes are so iron-hungry. I *think* this is the way it is supposed to be, at least till I get farther along in the progression. Is this correct?

So class hasn't even started and I'm already worrying about an APA-style 10-page paper I have to write as an ongoing project for the class.

YAY COLLEGE. OFL

the fourth episode may be a longer wait than anticipated....

Forget this, weird game crashing bug returns. Sorry I cant do much in modded minecraft with 9/10 packs crashing for no reason every 10 seconds.

I'm certainly not trying to tell you how or what to play, but you appear to have a defeatist approach to this. If you aren't enjoying yourself you may need to step away from it for a bit and find something less stressful.

"9/10 packs crashing for no reason every 10 seconds" is either exaggerated, the packs are not unmodified mainstream packs, or your computer setup has some really serious issues.

I could, with a high likelihood of success, randomly pick 10 packs off the FTB launcher, install them and play them *as they were packaged* with a much lower failure rate. If I then went in and added or removed things without fully considering how those changes might interact with the pack I installed, I could very well encounter failure rates coming close to what you mentioned.

However, in that case, it isn't the pack that is the problem. It is making changes to the pack that is the problem. The solution isn't to throw my hands up and give up. The solution is to come back on here and say something like "Hey guys, I just installed the DW20 1.7.10 Stable release, I tested it and everything seemed fine, but then I added <insert favorite alternative mod here> and things started blowing up left and right! Can anyone help me figure this out? Here is a pastebin of my crashlog as well."

I'm not trying to add to your stress, I'm trying to show that your recent post history isn't allowing for people to provide potentially helpful advice, much less even attempt to assist you.

With very few exceptions, mostly 3am porn spammers from somewhere overseas, the people here can be remarkably helpful if you give them a chance.

To start with you can do this challenge in Vanilla Minecraft.
Secondly, what are the specs of the computer you are using? I consider mine to be low specced and kinda crap (meaning the parts were new around 3-4 years ago) but I can run any pack I've tried so far without much of a problem. It could be a Java problem as you need 64bit Java to run 1.7.10 modded packs properly. If not try installing the update before the most recent one and see how that goes.

If that still doesn't help, post a crash report and someone may be kind enough to help you like they did me.
Generally it's something small.

In other news, I encountered a wierd interaction between Rotarycraft, Tinker's Construct, and the Progression mod. I wasn't able to save the log (my daughter actually found it) but she was trying to make wooden Rotarycraft gears in a Crafting table (tinker's construct variant, not vanilla) and as soon as she put the materials in the table to complete the pattern, her client would crash. The server was fine, but her client died every time. The error log kept saying something in the joshie.progression mod was the source.

This was odd as I don't actually have any rules or constraints in place for the Progression mod yet. It's completely default.

I pulled out Progression and everything works peachy. When I get more time, I'll try to recreate the issue to see if I can get a better error report.

Is there any chance the same recipe has a different output from progression? If so try something like NoMoreRecipeConflicts (or something like that) to enable switching which item is made.

Otherwise that is weird. I've found lately that the client crashes easier than the server.

On a side note, thanks to the earlier post about rotary craft I've added it and a few of the creators other mods to my list. Haven't attempted an install yet so hopefully that goes well.

I have TiCon, Rotarycraft (if it works), Progressive Automation and Draconic Evolution as my tech nods at this stage from memory, might need 1 more, not sure yet.
Thaumcraft, Botania and Chromaticraft as Magic mods.
And some other random stuff such as Chococraft, Galacticraft ect.

Still looking around slowly until I make something I'm happy to start the challenge with :p

I've got TiCon, RotaryCraft, Progressive Automation, Draconic Evolution all working well together with the exception of that issue with the Progression mod. I had to make a slight biome adjustment for RotaryCraft and Twilight Forest to play nicely together (biome ID conflict for two biomes) but that was pretty easy to fix.

I have Thaumcraft and Chromaticraft installed, but have so far not included Botania this time around. I also have Mystcraft installed and every time I change up my mods, it wants to recalculate the Baseline Profile. Quite annoying, but I don't turn it off so it makes me think a little more carefully about what changes I make before I make them so I don't change things quite so haphazardly.

I had Millenaire also installed and working, but couldn't really see myself using it as much as I'd like, so I took it back out.

Yep, it's like old IndustrialCraft. You see iron, and you are probably more excited than finding diamond ore. My suggestion is to get the Grinder ASAP, and then the extractor. Reika balanced the mod around having a working extractor, it's the only thing that makes sense with the material costs in some of the items.

sorry about my little outburst, but my computer just doesn't seem to like modded minecraft. It was just so infuriating to finally settle down on nice world and prep for the challenge only have crash for no apparent reason. believe me, I reinstalled a fair bit of stuff trying to fix it. the feeling of having everything you just did suddenly be for nothing is what made me post that. I might try it in vanilla sometime, but all these sudden crashes in the wake of cleaning up a really annoying rootkit just has my tolerance for things a bit spent.

Can you run any completely stock packs without crashing?
some times I can run a modpack with 200 large mods, other times I can run one with 50 small ones. it just depends on how minecraft feels. it even crashes on packs that were doing fine yesterday. I don't know what it is, it just like something tells minecraft to close for no reason. the game doesn't even lag or run into any kinds of problems before crashing.

Having gone through the wiki... I seem to have sorted out requirements for advancing. Some stages aren't exactly clear so I made some guesses as to what's appropriate. I'll post my resource requirements later.
Welcome!
If you go back a couple of pages, I posted a reddit link that has pdf's for almost everything from the old wiki before it died. I've found them to be a bit easier to understand if you want to have a look. There are 3 links as two of the pages didn't seem to comes as PDF's and are html files.

Good work on getting to the wood stage already, feel free to post some pics of your progress as you go, especially the end of stages.

What are you doing the challenge on? Vanilla or a mod pack?

I've been using the wikia site. Some of the lack of clarity comes from using mobile I think. It gets a bit funky on formatting. And doing it as a modded using the basic infinity pack. With a couple of minor configure changes.

Maybe a little, but I struggles with it a bit on desktop also.. But it's up to you what's easiest to use.
Nice, I was going to use Infinity with added mods, but I ended up continuously breaking it with what I added, so instead I'm creating my own pack. So far it's going okay, but slowly.

Going from dirt to wood is the easiest jump. I got lucky and found a witchery village before I found my spot to start building

Yeah they are good. Just remembering if you didn't see it that they don't count towards the building requirements. They're great to build around as a starting point though. And once you can light the place up they're easy to keep mobs out of.

I know. I'm actually a fair ways away from it. My start is actually near a AE2 meteor. Going to use it as part of the lore of the kingdom. Something along the lines of "when the meteor fell from the sky and wiped out all but a small few..."
