I'm feeling very close to the end of the Wood Settlement build. Very exciting! It's probably going to be just at the edge of the new year when I switch to stone.

We get a new refugee the trapper:

And some seasonal decorations on the side:

And making a storage building, which may be a bit large given I'll only be using it for the wood stage and early stone:

heh. Okay, this new world is better.

Found a Jungle and, exploring around the outside perimeter, it's 1.5 km by 1.5km. and I visually (or at least using journey map) confirmed there are at least 2 cats and 6-8 tropical hives.

If I delved deeply into the jungle I'd know a lot more. And I will. Because from here on out it will become known as the Timbervale Jungle. And will be getting a Natura Redwood very, very shortly.

Going to do one quick cheaty scouting break to look for a Mesa using BoP's Biome Locator, then it will be time to actually get going in earnest.

Okay.

I THINK that the overhaul of the backbone of the Challenge is complete. Basically, I'm adding what could be either the main source of your building inspiration or a bit of fluff you add here and there:

Races, Guilds, and Heroes.

Each Race has an advantage and a disadvantage. Each Race has ANOTHER Race that is their antithesis. I am going to eventually give every race a different military style (each with a hostile mob that they hate more than anything else), but I'm getting the basics done first.

If it stops being fun keeping track of all this, just stop and have fun. Rule of Cool.

Also, Disclaimer, this is written for a bit more of a spread-out challenge. More of a Kingdom Challenge than a Capital Building Challenge. Which was, after all, the original vision.

The Player "Race" is intended for people that don't want to give a drawback to their entire civilization, and should only ever be an actual, live player/challenger.

Favored Tools: The Race of the Settlement/Town District Leader determines that Settlement/Town District's Favored Tool
  • Players: Mythical Race, True Neutral (or totally custom)
  • Testificates: Merchant Race. Horrible Craftsmen
    • Favored Tool: Shovel (+1 Tier, no Stacking)
  • Humans: Craftsman Race, Horrible Merchants
    • Favored Tool: Axe (+1 Tier, No Stacking)
  • Gnomes: Technological Race, Horrible Magician
    • Favored Tool: Screwdriver/Wrench/Hammer/etc
    • Tech Nut Gnomes: +1 Tech Tier
      • Max bonus: +3 Tech Tiers
    • Favored Tech Gnomes: +2 Tech Tier (1 Tech/mod)
      • Max bonus: Entire Tech/Mod unlocked
  • Witches: Magical Race, Hate Technolgy
    • Favored Tool: Wand/Staff/etc
    • Wizard Witches: +1 Magic Tier
      • Max Bonus: +3 Tech Tiers
    • Sorcerer Witches: +2 Magic Tier (1 branch of Magic)
      • Max Bonus: Entire Branch of Magic/mod unlocked
  • Elves: Excellent at Agriculture, Horrible Miners
    • Favored Tool: Bucket
  • Dwarves: Excellent Miners, Horrible at Agriculture
    • Favored Tool: Pickaxe (+1 Tier, no Stacking)
Sorcerers and Favored Techs give no bonuses to any other mod/Tech, AND have double the drawback to ALL Tech/Magic. At a 2x Tech Nut/Sorcerer Drawback, Magic is set back 4 Tiers. If there is a 3x Drawback in your civilization (a Tech Nut/Sorcerer Advisor/Ruler/Settlement or City District Leader, all Magic or Tech is BANNED from that Settlement/City District. If both Magic/Tech Advisors are Tech Nuts/Sorcerers, they cancel each other out.
Next, the Heroes and the Guilds, because they're basically one and the same. Basically, every single major building would be home to a Hero. Or have a Supervisor watching non-Heroes work. Right now I have 6 Major Guilds (and almost everything would fit in underneath that somewhere), and the military, which will be something else I will tackle, hopefully soon.

Okay, for the rest of this, I'm going to get the Bonus hierarchy out of the way, first:

Bonuses stack up to 3x. Drawbacks stack up to 2x. So even if you had max Drawbacks, if you also somehow had max Bonuses, you would have a SLIGHT Bonus.
  • The Ruler's Bonuses/Drawbacks affects everyone in the Kingdom.
  • Each Guild has an Advisor, helping the Ruler. Their bonuses affect everyone within their specific Guild.
  • Each ruler of a Settlement/City District's Bonuses/Drawbacks affect EVERYONE within their Settlement/City District.
  • Each Shop/Facility Owner/Supervisor's Bonuses/Drawbacks affect EVERYONE within their Employ. If they are part of a Guild, their Bonuses and Drawbacks Affect the entire Facility. The Ruler's Bonuses/Drawbacks affect the entire Facility. The Settlement/District Leader's Bonuses/Drawbacks affect the entire Facility.
Easier to read Tables at the bottom of the Races page

Or TL:DR
*Bonus in this case means Bonus/Drawback
  • Any Ruler gets his bonus, his Advisor's Bonus, and the Bonus of whoever leads the Settlement/City District he lives in added onto his Grand Master skills.
    • If He is the Leader, he adds his Bonus again.
    • If he is running a Farm/Shop/Facility, he can add his own Bonus again.
    • If he is working in anyone else's Farm/Shop/Facility, he takes the Bonus of the Owner/Supervisor.
  • Advisors gets his Ruler's Bonus, his own Bonus, and the Bonus of whoever leads the Settlement/City District he lives in added onto his non-ruler Grand Master skills.
    • If he is running a Farm/Shop/Facility, he can add his own Bonus again.
    • If he is working in anyone else's Farm/Shop/Facility, he takes the Bonus of the Owner/Supervisor.
  • Anyone working in a Shop/Facility gets:
    • Ruler's Bonus on top of his Rank skills
    • Advisor's Bonus on top of his Rank skills
      • ONLY if the Advisor is in the same Guild
    • Settlement/City District Leader's Bonus on top of his Rank
    • The Supervisor of the Shop/Facility's Bonus on top of his Rank.
  • Bonuses cap out at 3x Bonuses on top of each other, or 8x skill level (2*2*2), granting even an Apprentice with no Drawbacks in his area 32 crafting/sales/etc or 8 4x4 plants.
    • a Guild Member would have 160 whatever, or 80 4x4s if max Bonus, no Drawback. Master skills get even MORE ridiculous.
  • Drawbacks cap out at 2x Drawbacks on top of each other, or half of the default Rank skills: each Apprentice can do 2 items, or a 1 2x2.
  • Bonuses and Drawbacks cancel each other out.

Okay, so that's how the the Racial Bonuses affect each group. But not every person is skilled at the same level. For this, I came up with the Heroic Hierarchy:
Generally, each rank specializes, and only does one thing within the guild (ie in Agriculture only grows food crops, only tends animals, only does bees, etc). Masters can pick 2 Specialties AND do everything else within the Guild (albeit everything outside their specialty at the Guild Member level). Grand Masters get 3 Specialties. Anything out of their specialty is done at the Guild Master level. Rulers may be considered Grand Masters of every Guild with Specialties in everything, or just have a Personal Estate with whatever they want.

Only Guild/Grand Masters can use dangerous and/or super-powered stuff like nuclear reactors, genetics, etc.
  • Apprentice
    • Takes one Player Stage to become a Journeyman (or Rule of Cool)
    • Apprenticed to a Guild Master, usually a bunch at a time
    • Can do 4 of whatever (or grow 1 4x4 of plants). If Bees, 2 Apiaries or 4 Bee Houses
      • 32 of whatever, 8 4x4s at Max Bonus
  • Journeyman
    • Takes one Player Stage to become a Guild Member (or Rule of Cool)
    • Under the tutelage of a Guild Member to finish their training.
    • Can do 8 of whatever (or 2 4x4), if Bees, 1 Alveary, 4 Apiaries, or 8 Bee Houses
      • 64 of whatever (or 16 4x4--256) at Max Bonus
  • Guild Member
    • Can be trusted on their own, can take on Journeymen or Guild Members to help them out.
    • Can do 20 of whatever (or 5 4x4). If Bees: 3 Alvearies, 10 Apiaries, or 20 Bee Houses
      • 160 of whatever (or 40 4x4--640) at Max Bonus)
    • If a brand new discipline, most Guild Members start here.
  • Guild Master
    • can do 40 of whatever (or 10 4x4). If Bees: 6 Alvearies, 25 Apiaries, or 50 Bee Houses
      • 320 of whatever (or 80 4x4--1,280) at Max Bonus
    • Can take on as many Apprentices and/or Journeyman as they want.
    • Usually only a limited number of Master slots at any one time.
  • Grand Master (Advisor)
    • Can do 80 of whatever (or 20 4x4). If Bees: 15 Alvearies, 50 Apiaries, or 100 Bee Houses.
      • Can do 640 of whatever (or 160 4x4--2,560) at max Bonus
    • Only 1 Grand Master at a time.

I'm going to, eventually, get around to rank-appropriate housing options. Using this system will super simplify building requirements. Instead of saying "build x farm houses. Farm houses can only do x plant squares," I'll just be able to say, "have x food," and you can decide if you want to have tons of Apprentices running everything or a few Guild Members and a couple of Guild Masters.

Now, obviously, if you stuck with ONLY this you would take a LOOOONG time to get Guild Members up and running. Which is where the last little bit of this update comes in. Something I've really, really wanted to do before but couldn't figure out the specifics:

If you have a few Masters, they can head up a Guild-specific School! Schools can take in as many people as they have beds for, and in the span of a single Challenge Stage, turn them into fully-fledged Guild Members. I WILL be elaborating on this as soon as I get rank-specific dwellings going. But for now, there needs to be at least 2 Masters from the Guild in question, bedding for everyone, and at least one patch/facility/room dedicated to every kind of work in the Guild that Members will be working with.

In practice, this could end up being a single 4x4 of crops, a breeding pair of animals, the basic machines that Magic/Tech will use, etc. Each particular item doesn't have to be HUGE, but it has to be there. Or, the School could be the main producer of whatever the Guild does for the ENTIRE civilization.

I may expand this to every student has to have a 4x4/breeding pair/basic machine/etc, to more organically make the school bigger or smaller, depending on the number of students.

Also, these Schools have to be in Settlements/Districts that are DEDICATED to that particular Guild.

Yes, I realize how OP a 3x production Bonus set on top of Grand Mastering would be. 640 of whatever they do, or 160 plant 4x4s (ie 2,560 Plant Squares). They're Grand Masters, for crying out loud.

This is a broad sweep.

A more fine-toothed balance pass will come over it for Machines, etc.

Okay, so some of you may have seen edits on the wiki by CLOUDSofSTEEL. They were unauthorized and I'm taking the precaution of protecting every single page (which, I admit, I was a fool to have left wide open as long as I did. He seems like a decent enough guy, but he didn't even try reaching out to me at all. No messages on here, the minecraft forums, or anything until after I had rolled back the tiny changes he had made.

.......and he posted this on the minecraft forums, which links to a wiki. Which is 95% a straight up copy/paste of the old wiki.

So I posted on his thread, and then reported it. Look, I have no issue with people making challenges BASED off of this challenge, but straight-up stealing really annoys me.

So does claiming that the challenge died even after I had been in the middle of going at it again, and editing the wiki for days before he posted his thread. I mean, sure, you could post a comment on the wiki, but the link to this exact thread is literally on the front page of the wiki.

That gets under my bones. You can come right over here and see that the challenge isn't dead. So what, adults have lives and can't play every minute of every day (sadly). That doesn't mean it's dead.

At the VERY LEAST, contact the author! This isn't hard to do! Just comment on here and someone will reach out!

Geez!

//End grump.

Sidenote: tomorrow my fiance and I will have been together for 5 years. Yay!

I do love your reply @Maul_Junior though admittedly it's much less colorful then i would have been. Your work is very much enjoyed by the following you have here, and dead it is not. Keep up the awesome work you do for this challenge YOU created.

Delayed for extended periods, sure. but never abandoned.

Pretty sure you guys wouldn't do anything of the sort, but I'm going to make a blanket disclaimer here just in case anyone tries anything in the future:

I consider this pretty much settled, save forum moderation over at the MCF. I've said my piece, and I don't really think there's much left to say. As far as I'm concerned, please leave the guy alone (but please do let me know if he tries this again). Harassment, etc should absolutely not occur.

Just posting that because this is the internet and little things can quickly snowball into drama hurricanes. Especially over stuff like this.

I don't mind people advertising their challenges here (looking at you, @Monarch_of_Gold. Admittedly I was a little leery but if I figured what the hell), as long as THEY ARE NOT PLAGIARISED. I really don't want other challenges to TAKE OVER the thread, but every once in a while to raise awareness--sure.

Monarch's challenge is most certainly not plagiarised, neither is the Fantasy City Build linked in the OP.

See? I can be reasonable, if you're respectful.

@Monarch_of_Gold conga rats!

EDIT: I.....may have allowed myself some rather petty revenge on the wiki.

It's protected so only admins/mods can edit it.

Hah. But, see, I at least knew what I was doing was more or less a forum sin, and even said as much before I even started that post. I simply wasn't sure where else to do a plug that I knew people would at least see it, so I did it here and properly attoned.

And thanks.

I will admit I was alittle angry at first, but then after giving it some thought I realized it wasn't really hurting anything, unless you tried to take this thread over.

*shrugs*

...........I just realized my corrupted world had TWO SETS OF BoP SWIMMING FINS (lets you move just as fast in water as you do on land).

*SOB*

That said, I have cats (spotted probably 150 wild ocelots prowling around, I probably have 15+ cats at this point. Still no siamese grr), AND three dogs AND four donkeys that I've found. All I had was Donkeys before. No Cats, no Dogs (hadn't even found a JUNGLE).

My current project: Building a highway through the southern reaches of the Timbervale Jungle to reach the Ass Plains on the other side--so named because it is there that I found my donkeys. The Ass Plains are FULL of horses. If Journeymap can export the explored map into a picture file, I'll probably throw it up and label it.

And it's a PITA to try to get horses through the jungle (it's gonna be a LOOOONG ride to get a Donkey or two to the trade hub/mining camplike 1.5 and 3k roundabout as opposed to ~700 and 1.1k over the ocean).

At first I was cutting down EVERY tree, then every tree but Jungle 2x2s, then every Oak Trees (because Amaranth are TALL, yo).

Now I'm just clearing out the underbrush unless there' a place the horse wouldn't be able to get through. Using Logs to build 4-wide bridges over rivers, so I don't have to slow down.

Also, my world, which seemed so huge when I was travelling by foot, is considerably smaller when I started using boats (and using boats to get my three dogs from the Ass Plains back to Timbervale). There's basically 2 giant oceans atm, separated by a tiny isthmus (well, more a pair of peninsulas REAAAAAALLY close to each other. Timbervale and the Ass Plains are in the Northern ocean, the Trading Hub/Capital and the Mining Town in the Southern. Although there's a Swamp that basically surrounds the Mining Town's ocean access that makes it a PITA to get there. Eventually I'mma need to clear a path out for boats.

Also probably make buoys with torches on them so I don't accidentally move a couple hundred blocks in the wrong direction--and a smallish floating platform in the middle of the Ocean. possibly a small, regional trade hub?

At this point, I think this world is WAY better than the corrupted one, even if I don't have anywhere near the progress. It even has some Mesas. With above-ground mineshafts. and Bryce Mesa. and Mesa Plateaus. Except they're 7k away from the Jungle, and there isn't a Jungle near the Mesa. I considered starting in the mesa, but hardened clay takes a pickaxe, and doesn't have cats and Tropical Hives (super backpacks FTW).

And I was going to make some more progress and do some wiki stuff tonight, but the wiki stuff turned into protecting everything and I don't think I have the energy for more than that tonight.

Oh well, guess I get to work on my Jungle Highway some more.

.....probably gonna make a second shot at trying to do a MC Forums thread here soon. The last one is soooo old and was from before wikispaces went subscription only.

EDIT: Or maybe I'm I'm in a better mood for writing than I thought.

Races is updated with 4 things for each race: Each one now has a favorite type of wood, food, friendly mob, and hostile mob. Gnomes hate Witches (despite them being a race in the Challenge). Testificates like Wheat and Oak Wood.

Dwarves like Dark Oak and Mushrooms.

I would like, eventually, to build up a custom pantheon, with a god/ess for each Race. maybe even give them in-game effects if they have a shrine/etc inside a town.

Also, going to be get going on updating the stages again once I get a bit more work done on the guilds.

Going forward, there will be a certain amount of people that just live there. stuff you always need to build. Then there will be other areas, like Agriculture, the next major section I plan on tackling, that will allow you to either build relatively little and have one or a few person/peeople controlling food production for everything, or tons of little houses everywhere.

Or, you know, a mix of the two. A couple main manufacturers in the central area, and a bunch of tiny people in the boonies. or the opposite. Or no big guys, no small guys, just a bunch of medium-range stuff.

And the work I do on THAT will easily branch out to almost everything else, thanks to the new Guild system. each section will need some attention all its own, but not as much as if it were all from scratch.

EDIT2: aaaaaand MCF doesn't save drafts for new threads.

REALLY? there goes half an hour of work down the drain because my browser froze up for hwat seemed like ever.

Muahahahaha I will totally take over this thread as my own!! (eh. Nah)

I did actually think about making a post over here on the FTB forums for my challenge, but there is so much that this place basically just goes "NOPE" and says there's too much to post here. So, it'd have to be incredibly abbreviated with a link to the original thread if I did make a post here, which would be a lot of work (because actually I think even the straight challenge itself (even with just the 12 stages) is too long) because I'd have to decide what was important enough to go on the post here and what would draw people in enough to go to the original thread.

Anyway, your new ideas sound interesting, though taxing. That's a lot of writing and planning. Mine was more or less inspired from the FCB challenge, which helped a lot in terms of having a decent starting place.

But yeah, sorry you had to deal with people trying to be thieves. That's never fun.

I was going to just edit this in, but I'm feeling a bit smug and felt this deserved a double post.

the MCF Thread is up. I called it:
[Challenge] The Refugee to Regent Empire Building Challenge. The Original and Only Authorized Version. version 3.0-4.0

It feels good to have it up there on the front page on top of the knock-off. Refined my ass. That's a year and a half or so backwards, at least.

Plus the first line of his thread, centered, and in large text is "It's Back!"

First line of mine? "It Never Went Away!"

Sometimes I forget just how huge this damn thing is. Until I get overwhelmed and need to step away for my own mental health.

He only has Dirt/Wood on his wiki. Well, I riposted with the exact same stages in the OP. In my pique, I may have.......made building requirements far more stringent than what's technically on the wiki atm.

I......may be trying to shock and awe him. And my apology for lack of content (even with the decently large build requirements [if you're not familiar with the Challenge's later stages, anyway] as it is) is real. that really IS just a tiny fraction of the full challenge.

*glances at his wiki* oh, he has NOTHING in the Wood stage. lol.

Bully for me. Poor little plagiarist.

I may have been listening to this on repeat, and it may have affected my mood while I was typing things up.

I've always thought about adding "The Mobius Variations" page as a guide for what I do, have thought about doing but down right forgot about. Too busy building a regency and some pay the bill stuff at the moment.

Next in the series of things I've done. Building a path to the rough centre of town. Mostly this is lowering hills and making steps also being surprised by all the Mo' Creatures mobs about.

And then the penultimate building in the wood settlement stage The Fisher's Hut. BTW I love Decocraft!

Mobius, if you want to I am more than happy to give you a page or ten on the wiki. You've been a staple of this Challenge for years, and have almost single-handedly kept this thread alive during my absences. you'd just have to make an account and I'll see if I can fiddle with the permissions so only you (and mods/admins) can edit them.

Or you can make your own wiki. whichever.

Also oupdate on the drama, we've talked over PMs over on the MCF. he's shutting down the copy/paste wiki and working up his own challenge based on mine. Which, as long as it's not a direct copy, I am totally cool with.
