Can I host?

My favorite server has just announced it has closed its doors due to a lack of funds. I have an old IBM desktop with 4 GBs of RAM that has been retired from use for some time. So could I feasibly have the current owner (if he allows me to) transfer the necessary files and such so I can host? What affect would this have on server quality, my internet, etcetera.

Also, if it is feasible can some kind soul link a tutorial?
 
Depending on how much traffic there is on the server, your connection speed (namely upstream) needs to be good. Also depending on your machine's specs, the server might suffer some problems and/or instability (Really impossible to tell if you don't provide further tech info).

But yes, the current owner can easily send you the files so you can "continue" hosting the server.
 
Personally, I would never host a public server from my home. It won't take long before some ahole decides he is going to start DDoSing you and you will have to go through the trouble of getting your IP address changed, or you will get hacked because you don't have the type of security measures in place that larger companies have and suddenly all your passwords are stolen, they have your credit card and bank account numbers and your spending the next year or five trying to rectify the damage they caused.

I have FTB Ultimate running on a really slow 1,99ghz 1,24gb ram server.
Normaly this would be quite impossible for those stats with around 3-5 users online no problem.
The way i solved this was using MCPC-Plus together with TickThreading. cpu is mostly around 40% and ram around 500-700mb ram.
Though when loading chunks you might expect a bit of lag and cpu usage go up to 99%.

Still not recommended to publicly host anything, i host it for a few friends/family.
You got more ram something thats causing me some problems 1,24gb is way to low. but even with chunk loaders different worlds i hardly have problems unless exploring large rage of new chunks.
