Just sit there fisting stuff and raiding dungeons until I can find enough tinkers patterns to make stone/flint tools.
Creepers are quite useful.

Incorrect. Infinicraft, the orecursor to TiC, was meant to make it possible to use minecraft without ever using wood.

Ahh, I remember island starts with no trees.
I remember being able to turn sand into sandstone, use that to make some initial tools, etc.
