Asset hash checking failed: All modpacks

  • Tech Support section is for getting help with FTB related problems. If there's a repeatable issue that can be labeled as a bug, then please use the issue tracker for the pack or the app at GitHub issue trackers - If there's no repository for a pack that means that the pack is old and/or will not be updated. Bugs for older packs will not be fixed, unless they are critical.

Title:
Asset hash checking failed: All modpacks
Launcher Version:
1.4.8
Modpack:
-
Modpack Version:
-
Log Link:
Details of the issue:
Practically every modpack I try launching (3rd party mods) ends up after some downloading with "Asset hash checking failed", which after 5 failed attempts just brings up a message saying downloading failed.
I managed to run Blood'N'Bones and 'Crash Landing' however even with those two it took some effort (just retried a few times. Didn't help with other mods)

Tried looking for help around the forums and google but no luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

yup. E.g. ESET has HIPS which is not disabled by normal firewall/AV disable buttons.

I tried running it without any antivirus or protection program on and firewall disabled.
Doesn't seem to work.

jikuja, can you be more specific? I've got no idea what's ESET and HIPS

ESET is an antivir producer and HIPS is Host Intrusion Prevention System.

Basically, even if you generally disable some antivirus programs/firewalls, they will still have minor, hidden things running to prevent complete unsafety.

I see, I'll go look up how to disable those and retry.
Thanks, updating soon.

Okay, took me long enough but I disabled everything I could.
No dice. Things still won't work.

Any other ideas please? :(

Proper fix?! Do you mean we need to test every possible antivirus application and write guides what to disable and where? Did you check your AV vendor documentation or did you contact them and asked them to fix their application?

Do you have any idea of the resources and time needed for that. I have tried that few times and result is always something like: request AV application name, install it, try launcher, everything works with default settings.

Edit: Did you ever mentioned what antivirus and firewalls are you using?

That's just the thing jikuja, I'm currently (while running FTB_Launcher.exe) not using any antivirus or firewalls.
At this point I deleted my antivirus and my firewall is a a standard windows 8.1 firewall that is disabled when I run the launcher.

I'm sorry if I what I said upset you, but it seems there are quite a lot of other people that have tried completely disabling anti-viruses and firewalls were also unable to do anything here. I'm not a developer but I would think that so many people having this problem and unable to solve it is a serious issue.

Something in your network is blocking the access. There's pretty much shit nothing we can do about it

Yeah, changing my OS is a bit too extreme for my taste (got software that are work related on my windows).

Is there anything I can do regarding my router? Perhaps port forwarding of some sort ?

Port forwarding won't help, that is only if you want to run servers

Something in your network is blocking the access.

No, that's not true. Files are succesfully downloaded, size of the files matches but checksum fails => something tampered the files. Last time I checked those kind of files something edited total 12 bytes of the jar file. It could be extracted and files were intact but something was changed. The component which tampers the files could be in the network. Never can bu sure what ISPs are doing...

@Zvi2 How much time do you think it requires to clone VM, install AV software into virtual machine, do reboot requested by AV and configure AV to reproduce problem of the user and then write fool-proof guide? Multiple that time at least by five to get guides for the most popular AV software.

Answer: 2-4 hours excluding guide writing. Maybe my machine for VMs is just too old.

hmmm... Running live linux, downloading file with a curl and then checking files' checksums manually could be used to find if problem is something else than software components in your current installation. That just requires someone to write a guide for those steps...

TBH I mostly blame users and AV/firewall vendors for this problem:
  • Logs are well-hidden. Documentation for getting logs? Does users check to logs if requested? Will they find the logs? Does product X even log its actions? Do we need to write guide for log checking?
  • Notifications can be easily missed. IMO notification about AV changing file should not disappear by itself and should not be easily turned off by the user. (it should be buried deep into advanced settings)
  • Then there are those features which won't be turned off by simply whitelisting .exe or directory. Documentation? Does anyone read vendor x documentation if requested? Do we need to read documentation and write own documentation?
Edit:
I'm sure most of the problems could be solved by reading AV/firewall documentation and by contacting to vendor if documentation is not available. Also reading warning dialogs given by the launcher or antivirus products would give clues about the problem Active network defense systems outside of the users' machines are harder to detect and requires clever ideas like that live linux testing I wrote earlier.

Sadly average users do not read warning dialogs given by the launcher and disable asap notifications of the antivirus products...

Edit2:
If someone has smart ideas to solve this huge problem without using hours of time to test various products and rewrite vendors' documentation I/we will gladly heard your ideas.

Oh yea, this was the hash thread. NSA all over the files
IIRC the file could be unzipped but JVM could not open the file with classloader/JarFile => checksum found real problem.

For the record: I've deleted all antivirus programs and firewalls and maleware protection programs from my system completely and rebooted, I've disabled completely all the ones that windows has by default, I've turned off my router firewall completely, and gave anything having to do with the launcher or java access to cross my already off firewall, and that still happened.

Really, it just doesn't seem that plausible that it's a firewall issue. If it is then I have no idea how to shut down more security measures.

There are good news though.
I've managed to bypass this.

I've installed the curse launcher instead and used that to install and launch modpacks from feed the beast.

Tested this on Refuge and Infinity and both seem to be working fine.
It may not be as 'comfortable' as simply using the regular launcher, but this works pretty great.
