How do you define "present"? Ninja scroll was published in the west 20 years ago. By all standards of history that may as well be the "present". That said I know people who refuse to watch films more than 5 years old as they feel "dated".
That said if your studying the evolution af the art in general you'll find the roots in 15th century peepshows or even story telling that extends into pre-history...

Meh, modern (10 years tops) anime is much better than other kinds of...well I think it qualifies as porn not anime at that point

I just forced the wife to watch Porco Rosso with me last week. If anybody remembers that disney tv show Tale Spin, the creators based it off of the manga that Porco Rosso was based on.
