If he wants to go the "everything is realistic" route, he should stick to a low tech - no machines route.
Are you sure he isn't aiming for the "see how far I can push my fans before they finally quit" route? Really I believe any difficulty/challenge should be implemented by the author of the mod and exposed via config settings.

I like Gregtech. I just don't like the new direction he's taking with overcomplicating the starting recipes and whatnot. I've said before, it doesn't make any sense to require tools and metal plates to make a simple sword but then allow someone to build a fusion reactor. If he wants to go the "everything is realistic" route, he should stick to a low tech - no machines route.

Same here. I've liked GregTech in the past, since it gave you a lot of end game stuff to do. Now you can't even make it beyond the first 20 minutes in a new world, without tripping over some GregTech crap.

I disabled XYCraft in 1.4.7, because it caused a lot more headache then there were benefits. Now GregTech is the same, for the next re-roll I'll either remove it from the modpack or will have to modify the configs a lot.

1.4.7 as in pre-machines XY, or after machines were released?

I don't recall XYcraft causing that many problems in 1.4.7, and the machines were definitely useful.

I like gregtech. I liked that he nerfed overpowered things like the quarry, mining drill, mass fab, bronze, solars, and laser. But I don't like what he is doing with his mod. Plates? Assembling Machines? Vanilla nerfs? and then make this mod crash with tinkers construct? He has gone way to far.[DOUBLEPOST=1374099609][/DOUBLEPOST]Also. I want this thread to discuss what greg has done, but I don't want to get this thread locked. (Not yet :p)

IMO, Gregtech makes the game more fun. What's the point of getting end game items early game? Gregtech makes it more challenging to get them. If recipes are too hard, you can adjust the config. People are always complaining about it, but they have a choice to configure GT to their liking, or even disable GT altogether. So many options.

The only problem I personally have with it is that at this point you have to use IC/GT to use not IC/GT

When i start a new world i usually decide what kind of system i want to start with in that world, so i get some variety and while i really enjoy doing GT builds, for the satisfaction i get when i finish something (after an hour or 2 of cursing gregs name), I also feel that i should be able to play the game without having to use gregtech and still be able to build those challenging things later when that's what i feel like working on.

Its the only mod in the FTB pack that you have to turn off to avoid needing to use, while other mods I enjoy equally i can start using when i decide i want to.

GregTech as a central mod in a mostly IC2-based mod pack works out quite well.

When you start including mods outside that sphere, however, things begin to... break down. Balance points between various mods are... nowhere close to being on parity. This is one of the challenges a mod pack compiler faces when making a mod pack.

Gregorious feels that it is his job and solemn duty to take this decision out of the mod pack compiler's hands and answer it for himself. And he vigorously defends his mod pack from interloping mods that contain 'exploits'. After all, how dare an end-user decide to play with HIS mod in a manner he did not intend!

As a result, I won't be using GregTech anymore. It isn't that the mod itself is bad, it is simply that I don't trust Gregorious to not pull another stunt like this, and I refuse to subject my users to potential crashes on account of drama.

It is a shame, GregTech had some really interesting ideas. Some of the machines and methods were quite innovative. However, it has gone in a direction which has ultimately become detrimental to the end-user.
