accidentally "upgrading" a machine with refined iron plates...

I accidentally right-clicked a machine with a refined iron plate, its texture changed and now i cant open the machine from the plated side...

What is this used for? Is there any way to remove this "upgrade"? Tried wrenching the machine and the faces and nothing happened.

Im using the 1.5.2 beta pack with greg.

Those are covers. Greg intended those plates to hide your machines. You will need a GregTech crowbar to remove the covers.

You can also use a railcraft crowbar, if you already have one of those.

Use a blue crowbar ... not the red pill....crowbar

If you use machine blocks as decorations, sure.
But they are also used to prevent cables connecting to the machines, which allows for more compact setups.

Don't quote me, but I also think they protect from the rain if you have rain explosions enabled.
