Originally it was just caves, after that I found Etho and his honeycomb setup so I was like screw my caves, void age honeycomb labs for me. Set that up on seperate games. It was great cause the center of it was an amazing barrel sorting room.

After I got bored of the void age honeycombs I took a break from FTB, Come back and I just build a shape on the ground, build up, and make it look good. Takes more work especially when you don't have resources early on, and is a total pain in the rear to keep looking nice when all the machines start invading your house but it seems worth while.

I think once the 0.7 version is released, I'm going to try to build into the side of a mountain - so I'm sorta above ground, while still satisfying my cave dwelling soul.

Never the same, sometimes ill live deep underground.
Sometimes i will build a disgusting looking building then the world gets corrupted.

Let me brainstorm what all my builds have been:

9x9
Aboveground stone henge like thing.
9x9
9x9
Underground
Underground
Underground
Void
Void
9x9.
Ive had too many corrupted worlds -.-

Both. I usually start by picking out a single chunk and then constructing my entire base within it. So I tend to dig out the entire chunk and then build up quite a bit as well. It's really a rather surprisingly large amount of space.

I typically go caving on the first night, set up base in there, and gradually transform the entire cave system into a polished base.

Generally, I like underground.

1) I suck at building, so I only need a small structure on the surface.

2) Expanding is simply a matter of digging (or using a filler).

3) Your chunkloaders don't have to do a hugely expansive area if you're building down instead of out.

Currently building a smallish spaceship (base-ship?) in a void age. Took a break from minecraft for a bit, but now I'm back really making progress on it. I'll have to resurrect my old thread and update the pics as I've made a good chunk of progress on it in the last couple weeks.

Both :) I use underground areas for farms / liquid storage and the aboveground part for machines etc.

Above ground in a flying base.
On land there is a Jetpack charger and an ender chest, so I essentialy can go up and down to my base in a matter of seconds.

I start in a cave (preferably in a cliff wall). Makes it easy to just dig out a room when needed. Once I have enough rooms of stuff to fill a house I plan one out them move outside. From there on it's usually outside, unless some cliff is just begging for a base.
