People have mentioned it before, but you have a few options. Play now, and when those mods become compatible, create a "mining age" with Mystcraft....or wait till everything is where you want it to be. Starting at launch, you will be able to learn other mods you might not be familiar with...

Perhaps an item frame thing but bigger to hold a large map and be able to display it on a wall of one's abode.... Server side, perhaps a way to display in-game players on the map as well instead of just the map owner....of course the players would have to be in range of the map....
