Well if your looking for a fairly quick method of learning, try direwolf20's 3 part spotlight on them, its fairly comprehensive in the capabilities of the new logi pipes, could use a few more details on AE interaction but the information is fairly solid.
It's not all that much fun if armor doesn't at least have 1 active ability and none of the current enchants bring that.
Vanilla armor is just simply bland much like the actual flow of vanilla.
I take it you haven't been watching dire's forgecraft 2 SMP series in 1.6, it gives a pretty good indication of how recipes are changing, although I wouldn't consider them harder, just more resource intensive which is usually greg's style.
They are part of the lore of the tower, its supposed to represent the experiments that eventually led up to the creation of the carminite reactors and the destruction of those who originally built the tower.

I was more careful about the selection of my second, making sure it had a better ventilation setup.
A word of advice, don't think that everything will always work as intended...
Hows this for a building concept, build a cobble box but build all of your machines storage and everything outside of the box, and when people ask insist that they must think outside the box.
XD but yeah I get the point your after, it's an absolute pain to program that way, going between two different professors in Java I could feel the difference when encapsulation is made known as opposed to enforced.
I think my professor who taught C++ would be right along with you though...
