    Currently as of 1.3 it is not possable due to the removal of dryads somthing I've seen on other packs as a compromise is trade in 8 nature essence and a pure essence for a spawn egg of the nature boss (until this problem is fixed at least)

    It's not quite this specific but close. There is always one stronghold and up to three diffrent ones and they radiate out from 0x 0z and tend to also be around world spawn. So when looking for it try and get to origin before you start chucking eyes.

    Does the spectre key work for anyone else? All it did for me was transport me below my base and stuck in a wall.

    You could try the thalmic infusion it is supposed to be able to increase spawn rates.     Nope I can't replace the water source or flowing and can't creep over it. Just make sure there isn't any crusted taint around as taint goo will replace water

    Fill the top of your wall with water it acts as a type of moat after you have that moat off your gates (or leave a pure node or bloom) then once you have cleared out tainted nodes it will not leek back in

    Passive mobs won't spawn in tainted land not sure why you aren't getting hostels though. (You might have hit your mob limit around your base underground. I'd suggest ether caving to reduce the spawnable zones or going on a walk 256 blocks away then returning)
