You can pipe out all the liquid from the smeltery into tanks. Since tanks cant contain more than one liquid tanks will only accept the correct metal, then you cna reverse the liquiduct or use another method to return the metal to the smeltery when you want it. The issue are alloys... but...

XP turtle, as stated above, will solve ypour problem. it can automatically collect an ?infinite? amount of XP and get rid of those orbs.

For all the work required to gather all the nessesary pages i wish it was a 100% deterministic process. Even if theres little variance, as you said, it still means several more age-creations than its really needed :/
