    Creeperhost is actually pretty good, they package are VPS and you do get full secure shell. However some hosts offer you a bunch of stuff for using them like buycraft/enjin/etc and that may make them worth it.

    Removing it after you have made your world could cause some very bad things to happen, I don't suggest doing it unless you want a new world.

    You are using the server.jar that came with the fresh install right?

    You do that in your startup script just like where you set it to 1GB of ram, whoever said too edit the level.dat I wouldn't trust with support. What you see in the level.dat is mathematical symbols, you would need a special editor to edit it.

    What exactly did you do to reinstall it? Are you trying to run plugins?

    Reinstall the modpack, server jar, mods, config, library's, etc.

    Increase your perm gen -XX:PermSize256m, add thwt to your startup arguments. In terminal what does the command java -version, say?
