They can output through blocks as well so long as they're in forced connection mode.

If you wrench the rednet cable it will change to forced connection mode. In that it should detect redstone signals through blocks

Those blocks aren't available in the 1.4.7 version of MFR. To get those you'll have to use Unleashed or Unhinged, the more up to date packs
