On the Lava step of the quest "Machines" under getting started, is it supposed to consume the bucket? Unless I'm missing a recipe, a block of iron per bucket is an awful lot that early. But, back to mines I guess. Also, is the steel recipe for the high oven disabled?

You can use the OP hqm book to complete the quest and toss the items, that's what I did.
