I'd say that simply saying what mod the item is from would be sufficient. There are plenty of lists out there of what mods are in each pack (hint hint :P)

I would suggest asking your server owner what versions of every mod they are using, then checking against your mods. If you find any differences, go to the mod's website/thread and download the version that matches your server.

It can't mess up computers by itself, but can make your computer just a bit more vulnerable to attacks. You probably shouldn't mess with it unless you know what you are doing though. And you need to port forward to run a MC server not on LAN anyway, so it is a moot point really. I have had port...

I don't think there are many hosting companies, if any, that offer the service you are asking for. Maybe you could get your friend to help you out, if they know a bit more? I can't give you any particular instructions on how to set-up a whitelist, because all server hosts will do it differently...

KingLemming, Sengir and mDiyo. They are always adding new things to their mods, and making sure they are relatively bug-free.
