I know nothing about computers! It took me 3 weeks just to finish getting a user name for this site. I have spent 120-150 this week trying to get a server for me and a friend. I make it very clear to the host company I know nothing and would like a server set up with FTB Ultimate all I want is an ip to put into my game. They tell me how easy it is to do I should just try. So after 2 hours of clicking things I can't even log in.So I just get a new server. My last server someone else came in the game so I sent a ticket asking to please whitelist my friend and I. I even said I would pay. They sent me a link to a wiki page. This is my last try then it's just single player I guess. All I want is a server that 2 ppl will play on whitelisted with FTB Ultimate. All I want is the ip to the server.I will pay for the service. Is there anyone who will do this?
Thanks and sorry if this is not the right place for this.

If you are setting up a server on your computer, then you need only to search "What's my IP?"
Poof.

I don't think there are many hosting companies, if any, that offer the service you are asking for. Maybe you could get your friend to help you out, if they know a bit more? I can't give you any particular instructions on how to set-up a whitelist, because all server hosts will do it differently, but if you can manage to get the the server console on your host's website, there are several commands you can use. /whitelist on, and /whitelist add [player]

EDIT: whizzball: I don't think he is setting up a server on his computer. And it is a lot harder than just finding the IP address. You need to set up port fowarding.

My father said Port Forwarding could mess up computers. He is not only a business man, but good with computers.

It can't mess up computers by itself, but can make your computer just a bit more vulnerable to attacks. You probably shouldn't mess with it unless you know what you are doing though. And you need to port forward to run a MC server not on LAN anyway, so it is a moot point really. I have had port forwarding set up for almost 2 years now for a MC server, and there is nothing wrong with my computer.

EDIT: Dow101: Are you doing that ingame? That won't work, unless you are an op. Go into your server control panel, then see if you can get to the console and use those those commands.

I realise that. I can't be any more specific than what I've already said unless I happen to know how to use your server host's control panel. What host are you using?

Problem solved!!! I just gave my friend that does IT $1500 he said he will go to FRY's buy my a server and set it up in my house for me. Thanks for trying to help. I guess I'll have a server of my own instead of renting.

I'd honestly not suggest running your own server (or even renting one, for that matter) unless you really know what you're doing. There are a number of things that can go wrong, and paying your IT friend to not only set up your server but also maintain it could get quite expensive.

I'm sure it will but I really enjoy playing FTB with my friend so the money is more then worth it for me. We all put different values on things. A plumber might smile when he walks out of your house using a $50 tool and charging $400 but you are so happy that you can now take a poop in peace.

Well if you do know what's your doing 1500 bucks isn't a ton of money for your own server. Renting fees adds up and if you can run your own then prices to keep it will probably be less but you'll have to consume more time and have to know how to run it right are the debt side of going that route. On the other hand getting someone else to do it can probably cost around the same or even more unless if you have someone that is willing to do it for little or nothing, like if they just want to play on the server too. So overall most of time it's just best to rent one, even after the costs adding up. You also won't have to worry about power going out or having to get backup generators or batteries cause data centers where you would rent one usually have some sort of backup and not to mention protection against thefts.

i dont see how building a new PC solves his port forwarding problems <_<....
Ugh, don't even mention "port forwarding." Over the past year, I've become convinced that my router's port forwarding is entirely broken. I host a small server for a few friends, and we have to play over a VPN because it refuses to forward Minecraft's port.
