My experience with the mattock was that it never behave like a shovel. Yes, it cuts wood fast like an axe but it doesnt dig dirt or sand fast as a shovel. Its easily noticeable if you try to dig grass, since grass is slower to dig then dirt. A low tier mattock speed is like digging with hands...
