I think servers can disallow CC from accessing the internet, otherwise you could set up something that DOS'd the server that it was running on. Also some people feel that having something inside of the Minecraft world that reaches out into the real world is cheating. I don't mind doing it myself...

They can always be condensed down into singularities, that's a legit reason for having lots and lots of items. Given a choice between 1. storing stuff, and 2. spending 63 years placing them as blocks (2 billion blocks at 1 per second), I'd store them. And not everything is placeable.

You're running a server and you didn't take a backup? On the subject of IDs - doesn't Minecraft allocate them nowadays, removing the need for us to have to worry about them? Does this mean that that system is a little less robust than we'd like?
