There are grass facades. You can just put a whole bunch of structure pipes around, although I'm not sure if mobs can spawn on pipes or not

Dirt has pure earth. Smooth stone has pure stone. Can't think of many others, they're quite rare, and purposefully so to make sure that they don't remove the point of getting essential bottles.

Might be a glitch. Redpower 2 volcanos are known to have random errors in them where the basalt doesn't even generate. Yours might be broken entirely to the point where it's just a spout of lava. Could you post a picture?
