I think they need to spawn on grass? Put down some dirt blocks near it and let grass grow. Don't know if it needs to be dark, don't think so.

I use the 'taint' one described above. Track ball since forever. Don't need to move the mouse around at all, just the ball on the mouse.

For me, personally, I'm partial to Y=63. It gives me a great view of the water and everyone knows waterfront property is the best for accruing value over time. I know the people down the street prefer high Y values so they can base jump, but I'm not into that stuff.
