The reason Immibis microblocks work on things like rednet cable is that, unlike RP2, the covers are purely visual. Code wise, the only thing it changes about the blocks are the rendering and the new hitbox for the microblock. If you were to put a cover between two pipes, they would stay connected.

I usually aim for a bone/flint head, stone or paper binding and a slime tool rod for my first tools. Later, I add a diamond for the better durability and mining level.
