    Bukkit/MCPC/etc Plugins can be useful in this regard, as a fair few plugins should exist for that purpose, and more besides, which you might find useful. :) However, it has to be said that some of these plugins or the server mods (MCPC+, etc.) can have issues with mods. As for the span itself...

    What is the best method to craft unstable ingots at the moment ???

    I think blast protection would work. In Minecraft, I believe, all explosions work this way, but you have to be right inside them for them to ignore armour completely. (E.G: Stand inside an exploding creeper) Thankfully, it's a rare chance you are right inside an explosion. :P

    Sadly, and perhaps not so much it doesn't, since it's just a kind of bone meal, with a water splash effect.

    Sudden FTB Lag

    See if your GPU is set to be the default graphics device used? I know some machines have a preference to the integrated GPU instead of the graphics card, which can cause a lot more heat and is inefficient. :)
