I've just tried to read an energy cell with computercraft in Monster 1.09 and it seems to work. I whipped up a simple read-out using an advanced monitor:

In addition to the redstone method you can hook up a computercraft touch screen to an enhanced portal dialing device and use methods like dialStored(i) and getStoredName(i) to choose and display your destination. The api can be found here.
Have you tried Thermal Expansion's glowstone illuminator. They can be set using the TE wrench (or maybe any wrench) to a mode proportional to the redstone signal strength:
They can be colored with dyes and they seem to work with Soartex:
