What marks a mod/item as "OP" or "Unbalanced"?

Here's what I'm seeing...

*blah blah blah* *balance balance balance* *WORDS*

The short answer:
Minecraft is YOURcraft (e.g. "mine"? as in the possessive?) It's up to you to determine what, in your world, is fair or unfair.
Don't listen to peer pressure; if something suits your playing style, do it.

My personal opinion, FWIW after my "short answer":
Something that gives high rewards for a low amount of input, such as a mod I saw earlier on MCForums that gives 5 (yes, 5!) nether stars for some cheap-o combination of diamonds and gold, is drastically unbalanced. Now, the work that's put into killing a Wither is totally more significant than the work that goes into gathering some diamonds and gold. And five Withers? You've gotta be kidding me...
OP? Totally.

It's a pity that the Monkeys+Typewriters+Time=whole works of Shakespeare is based on a the logic that monkeys will be typing on those typewriters. And scientists did a test on this; room full of 50 monkeys and 50 typewriters. 49 monkeys did basic monkey things(fling shit, fuck, try to become the alpha in this group). 1 curious monkey noticed a typewriter and pressed the "S" key, and was Shocked when he Saw that it did Something. So he Started pressing only the S key Since he noticed it first. This resulted in Several pages of just S's, and in the end, the Scientists decided that this experiment was totally worth the time and effort to get funding for it. Even if it proved that we can't get monkeys to type out the whole works of Shakespeare for us if we have enough of them in a room for long enough.

clearly then the theorem merely left out the need for infinite individual rooms for the monkeys with typewriters. that or was posited by an evolutionist, who somewhere deep in his mind felt shakespeare was a monkey, thus proving his theory .. in theory.

then again if each action is a branch point to a parallelization of reality, then the power of parallel processes mean that simple experiment already generated the complete works of shakespeare, merely spread across multiple parallel realities, with a whole bunch of gibberish and some political campaign writing thrown in for good measure, to be sure. parallel anything. definitely cheaty op.

Does it count if they fling things at key, or have intercourse on keys, therefore accidentally pressing said keys?

Woah, woah, woah. I just read somewhere that someone thinks that mods are OP. I have an extreme objection to that. I believe that mods are an extension to Minecraft, and that they aren't OP when compared to Minecraft. Mods will be what Minecraft will probably never be and allow us as users to experience what Minecraft can be.

Me: So I can get bedrock legit with this mod called RotaryCraft.
Him: If you're using a mod it's not legit.
Me: Nice definition of legit you got there.
And so on. We're friends, though and like to give each other crap.

This is actually completely valid, there's actually two scenarios I can come up with:
  • As far as I know it's a debated point whether Shakespeare actually wrote the pieces attributed to him, so these non-typing monkeys might know more than they should.
  • On another thought, the monkeys typing might count as a basic condition, so the non-typing don't count.

I dont know about Shakespeare, but it explains vanilla minecraft quite well.

Summary: "OP" and "UP" is subjective. It depends on the player. But depending on where you are, like forums and such, there is a "benchmark" balance. In FTB forums, our sense of balance is from Horizons, Direwolf20, etc. There's also the group whose balance is based around BnB and Magic Farm. Then there's the other group whose balance is based around Gregtech and similar grindiness.
That's basically what all these long posts come down to.

I wasn't going to chime in, but I'll give you my super-short answer for server play only:

I term something to be OP whenever it destroys the skill gap. That doesn't mean I won't happily play with it anyway, most times.

What's that mean, exactly? In general terms, and in my opinion, if I'm good at something and you're not (subjective, I know, so grain of salt) then I should have an advantage over you in completing that task, or completing it well. If a mod completely removes or even blows past that skill advantage, that's when I would apply the OP definition.

Anyway, for what little it's worth.

This is just a flame war waiting to happen...
But anyways, stone pickaxes are quite overpowered. Extremely cheap, and for every one you make, you can make 85 more, via the stone you collect. They are also decently fast. I have met few people who realise the potential of a dozen stone picks, and a single iron one.

Yeah, thank God for that. Ofc, I actually enjoy the occasional flame war. People bring up some interesting points, whih should be considered.
