Could you guys please please make the link to the different mod wikis on the main site work? It's kinda hard sometimes to find what something actually does in game with out building it and even then sometimes it pretty hard.

Thanks,

Are you guys going to need help getting the wiki fleshed out or do you already have a team working on it?

I hope the goal isn't to keep tight control of the wiki content, because IMHO that's the wrong approach.

IMHO it would be a terrible idea to open it for public editing. We all know that evil trolls walk the interwebz and they would jump at the chance to mess the wiki up, which would make the Wiki team work even more in having to clean up the troll "droppings". By keeping it locked and editable by only the Wiki team they are able to control the content to ensure it is professional and well written. Which, as a translator, I am thankful for. I'd hate to translate to spanish a troll's deifinition of compost o_O

The FTB Wiki may take some time to be a complete wiki but it will be a very good wiki once done ;) FTB is far from complete in my eyes and has a big future ahead of itself =)

Wikipedia itself is open to anyone, anonymous or not, and it is one of the biggest jumps in human knowledge, well, ever. These two things are not a coincidence.

For every troll there are 10 people who will contribute positively, and the "revert" button is right there, ready to wipe out the changes.

Minecraft exploded because it is such a creative, community-focused game. People want to show off and talk about their creations and what they've learned. A wiki is another avenue to that, unless you restrict it to "official sources." That's not a wiki at all, it's a knowledge base. And in my experience a hell of lot less useful.

Go to Wikipedia and read a page on whatever your job/specialist area is about and you will soon see that Wikipedia isn't all as great as you thought it was: there are a lot of errors. I am not sure what the plan for the wiki team is but they will be building it all first so its consistent then depending on how things go it could be opened if needed but I honestly dont think that will be needed after its initially built

So fix it. :) Of course it has errors, it's written by human beings. But over time they get corrected because it's so easy to correct them.

Open the wiki to the players. Keep your team working on it at the same time. We will save you a ton of work and probably add great things you never thought of. :)

To add onto this post the official one will be at http://wiki.feed-the-beast.com (Working in progress)

Any other link going to an FTB site isn't an official one.
Is this the actual link? Want to add to my info page ;)

You guys should publicize this more! Let us at it and let the crowd-sourcing wiki magic do its work. :)
They recently picked the wiki team (there was a thread made by Jaded I believe) and posted about it on the forums :p

Also, um, I can go in and change any information I want to on Wikipedia. That's why most universities don't accept it as a source.

IRL Wikipedia is a great source of information on most topics. No, it's not 100 percent accurate or complete, but then again, show me something that is. Wikipedia is good enough for most purposes. And FTB is awesome and all, but there's no need to apply university standards to its documentation.

The benefits of public editing are:
  • The public will do most of the grunt work.
  • Most of it will be reasonably accurate because it's self-correcting.
  • Mod authors and "official" wiki authors are free to correct anything that's wrong, and it's easy. Standards can still be enforced.
  • It's more democratic. It doesn't promote a system of (for lack of a better term) "haves" and "have-nots."
  • It allows the genius of the community to bubble up in unexpected places.

I wasn't arguing that Wikipedia isn't a good source of information. More so saying all information you get from it should be taken with a grain of salt.

Fun fact: You can actually make a Wiki account, and can make changes. (No I haven't changed anything, but I could get to the edit page without any errors)
