Just wondering what your favorite mods of all time are, to make it more interesting I've split it into 3 categories, use other for mods which aren't tech or magic based. If you're having a hard time thinking about this then just think about what mods (besides the core ones like Forge/NEI) you'd have in your own modpack.

1.. RotaryCraft (It's not as mathy as people think, most of it is doubling or halving, and that's not that hard, is it?)
2.. IndustrialCraft 2 Exp (Although it's dependant on other mods, yet maintains it's own power system.)
3.. Thermal Expansion/Ender IO (Both are pretty much even, I like both for different reasons, and cannot really put one above the other, yes I know this is somewhat cheaty.)

Magic
1.. Botania (This is probibly my Number 1 mod overall too, I don't think I'd play a pack without this now.)
2.. Thaumcraft 4 (aside from Sun Scorned.. boy I HATE Sun Scorned... Not that I get burned too much by it thanks to crimson pendant.)
3.. Blood Magic (I only really like the rituals, not the entire mod, so i can't really put this above Thaumcraft which i tend to like as a whole.)

Other
1.. Logistics Pipes
2.. Tinker's Construct
3.. Forestry (More for the trees than the bees... although bees are nice too)

I should note that alot of these are very close calls for me, especially between numbers 2 and 3 and especially on the other mods.
 
I don't really like splitting 'tech' and 'magic' -some mods are both so I prefer 'engineering'
Using "tech/magic" for complex design and building, rather than strapping stuff to your character.

Really tough to come up with favorite mods. I like lots of them.That i I bought minecraft for about $20, If I remember right. Back in Alpha. I have played it so much more then any other game. It has easily been one of the best purchases I have ever made. Though I really suck at playing the game I really do enjoy it. Mods just give me so much more to do.

TE is still top of my tec list but could easy swap with Ender IO, as for magic TC will allways be my number one with BM as a close second, I hated the idea of BM at the start, but the interesting things you can do with it won me over, have not got to far into botania yet but its very interesting mod & useful, the others are just staples in more or less every pack.

Man I forgot about RP, in 1.2.5 it was THE most underused mod when I started playing, I saw it transition from nowhere to OMFGWTFWOW everybody using it. I had tubing systems all over the place :D good times.
 
The kinda same thing happened to EnderIO, because Crazypants was faster then CoFH
 
Well yes and no, CP & tterrag made a ton of improvements and new features between 1.6 and 1.7, yes no TE helped some but it went up leaps and bounds anyway.
