About the only complaint I have with Harvestcraft is that as others said unless you find a village with a wheat field normal (wheat) seeds are extremely rare. As in I found one after clearing several small continents of grass.

But I like it enough to add harvestcraft and hunger overhaul to my DW20 world, and will probably keep it in. Mmmm, delightful meals...

Went ahead and started a MF2 world large biomes. Looks to be a great beginner's seed. Started near a big village in a plains biome. Gonna ask a bunch of questions and make a bunch of comments. We's gonna document this shizit

Just remember, the workbench is your friend, especially for basic things like salt.

Start by documenting the tools for the mod. They don't stand out in NEI, so it makes finding them a bit tricky.

And seriously, this mod is awesome, but it's darn near impossible to craft without an inventory included crafting station. The Crafting Backpacks from the Backpack mod are heaven sent. Then again, MMM... Pot Roast... Once I discovered that, I lived on that stuff in Horizons.

I love Harvestcraft but it only fits in thematically in packs like Magic Farm and it really needs Hunger Overhaul. In tech packs, most people would consider it a hindrance as it makes it hard to get basic seeds.

My big problem with Pam's is that as much as I really do like it, it's far too limited in what it can do for the insane amount of world gen and seeds it adds. Some food is better than others, but food is food is food and when I spent some time with Pam's I soon had a bazillion more veggies than I'd ever need.

Add some buffs or effects to the food and then we're getting somewhere. Make flying food with 12 different crops. Make fire protection food.

As it stands, apart from candles and hardened leather which are a great addition but only use a single plant, what we have is ten million retextures of the same stuff.

Or there could be a nutritional balance part that forces you to eat food in a balanced way rather than stacks and stacks of the same. The benefit of which would be temporary buffs like speed boost, mining speed, and jump height to name a few. It would probably better fit into hunger overhaul though. I'd hate to see harvestcraft become an extra bees type mod.

My main problem with the current food mechanic is that, combined with hunger overhaul, it seems incredibly arbitrary. Some crops are significantly more useful than others. Some recipes allow a wholesome meal for 3 or 4 ingredients, while others require 5, some of which need to be processed first. Once you can make the "easy" meals, experimenting further has significant diminishing returns, making it seem more like a chore. But to be fair, that is more a gripe I have with hunger overhaul rather than Harvestcraft per se.

I prefer soy based delightful meals myself. They provide a nice 6? minutes of the well fed buff which can come in handy when running about or using morph. It takes a bit of work but most of the recipes can fit into a workbench so it is not so bad.

I find the recipe guide useful, but cant be bothered to grow everything, I tend to stick with a few easy recipes, peanut butter n jelly sandwiches anyone?
I've done those. I've also tried rice soup. One other plant like corn to make three stock, and one rice for a good meal.

You can make a hearty meal with lettuce and a ton of different stuff. Spring Salad. Kind of makes a lot of the other recipes obtuse.

Spring salad is easy to make (lettuce and one other vegetable) but it wasn't a full meal. At least in MF1, where I last used it.

Just went and checked my Horizons world; it's currently a Hearty Large Meal. Lettuce, veggie, cutting board and mixing bowl.

Only clever "use" of all this food variety I could think of stems from weird city builder games such as dwarf fortress. Don't try to make it have various uses on yourself, make outsiders want it. For instance, villagers might demand certain foods, and would only trade if they were well-enough fed. They might trade at a better rate if they were getting elite foods.

they might run your factories at 135% production rate if they were getting BLTs!

Ok now I'm getting crazy.[DOUBLEPOST=1391012201][/DOUBLEPOST]PS: if someone hasn't created/thought up a mod for making testificates influence production rates, for shame, and, patent pending.

Pams HC is nice in theory, but it adds way too many seeds, and the configuration is horrible for any decently sized modpack. IIRC it adds a config file for each food item, which drove me to remove it from my 1.5.2 modpack and replace it with FoodPlus. Even then I didn't really like it because I had so many seeds, and all the foods were kind of pointless. GrowthCraft is pretty cool because it adds it's own mechanic; brewery. Of course, if you have IC2 installed (which most of us do) this is redundant.

Assuming you actually want to work with IC2 ;)

The one thing that keeps me interested in Pam's, in spite of all the issues, is that from a more role-playing sort of perspective, it's a fun mod. I have a friend who absolutely loves farming of all sorts, and PHC is a wonderful mod for him, with so many different things to grow and so much variety to make from it.

It's one config file now.
