Why can't I break blocks?

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, I've not been on these forums for a long time. But I can't break some blocks in Monster 1.0.9. Like I can break a gravel block with a shovel, but nothing else. That REALLY bothers me. Is there a mod that adds that? Can I disable it?

You may be in adventure mode try to see if you can switch back to survival mode

Stop cheating and switching yourself to creative Switch to survival, you're in adventure.

Yea, I was in adventure. I I was not "cheating". I had to go into creative because I got stuck in a chunk that wasn't loading.
