Gregtech, AE or MFR (For RedNet)
Forestry, Extra Bees, Railcraft and Tinker's Construct are good alternatives to.

AE and Thermal Expansion are very well done. I really like MFR too, but I'm holding off on messing too much with that untill our server supports it (we're on DW20 ).

For me it's Redpower2 (frames ftw!) and CustomNPC (traders, bards)

As others have said it's really hard to pick a favorite but I'd have to say Treecapitator. I love the changes they consistently make to address the mods balance and the fantastic job they have done to make it easier to add other mods "tree chopping devices" to be compatible with Treecap. The newest balance change is particularly a favorite of mine and makes total sense.
