Not everyone has the capacity to come up with something to build though so the machines from mods are their only achievements in and of themselves.

I was bored with the let's play episde I was cutting so I took a break from building to make an RFID & piston door lab for my lab floor was even done cooking. It is awesome. I can't imagine how people have problems coming up with super fun things to do.
Heck, with New Redstone and MFR's Rednet we are in a new golden age of automation. There are things we can do now that were insanely complicated to do before even with the very best redpower tools.
I'm going to make the entrance to my base work like this: either you have the right object and the system just opens the door for you, or you have to walk clockwise around the tower three times at sunset or sunrise and then it plays the zelda "mystery" theme. I buitlt this in vanilla 1.4.* and it was a huge project. Right now if I can get the materials it'd take me less than two hours, including the testing time. This is an easy task with modern minecraft.
Personally I have no sense of innovation/creativity/imagination so I usually just end up wandering around worlds not knowing what to do. I understand how each and everything works but I don't see them working together most of the time. I could never come up with the idea of that entrance to your base for example. I understand it without problem but an idea of the like would never enter my mind.
I wish I could just understudy with Sjin foor a few weeks to get a sense of how to make beautiful builds. The technical side is no issue for me and I love making automated things, but I get frustrated at my lack of ability in making a place "pretty."
