Lost as always
Well, some private packs, as has been mentioned before, have updated. In fact, considering you are a newer user, I would like to plug my own mod pack here. It's modded, you'll see some of the mods you saw on Mindcrack, and even a few you didn't, but it's got a LOT less mods than Mindcrack does, so it's a bit easier to 'get your feet wet'. I pulled IC2, so you only have to deal with one power system (Minecraft Joules, or MJ, from Buildcraft and other engines).

You can check it out here, although I'd suggest waiting a day or two to download and let team push the next version, because it removes CraftGide in favor of NEI which the Mindcrack team uses, and also gets a fairly major update for Forestry and MFR.

I'd also suggest going to the FTB Wiki for information on the various different mods. There's also a Collected Guides Thread that the amazing ICountFrom0 has been maintaining which has a wealth of information for people new to mods, including 'how to get started' guides on the 'major' mods.

Seems an even tougher decision. Have any of you guys made this decision yet?

I have. I moved onto 1.5.1/2 almost as soon as the majority of mods I wanted to use were updated. My reasoning was pretty simple: My 1.4.7 server was being affected by a couple of bugs, and I was hopeful that 1.5.x would resolve them.

So far... I've not been disappointed. I highly recommend it. I've actually kinda enjoyed putting together my own pack, as well. Theres a huge sense of satisfaction when everything starts working! :)

Watch Let's Plays. Lots and lots of Let's Plays. Also look at the wiki. Play around with all of the mods and see what you like the most, and focus on them. I give this advice to all new FTB users, and it seems to help out a bit.

I spend too much time do that anyway :D

Just start on 1.5.2. You will have a world reset in your future. It will happen. You should not feel bad about that. Remember; at any point in time you can just spawn in items to replace what you lost. No one will judge you for this and no one will say you didn't earn it becuase Minecraft, particularly modded minecraft, is your game.

I've always frowned upon this. I suspect others do. I have done this previously for a friend who played unregistered on our offline server and bought the game and needed stuff given - I guess I was OK with that

Thanks. I may give it a try at some point.

I gave that a try last night. I downloaded a majority of the mods used on the Mindcrack server. I didn't get to a point of installing and playing because, and I'd never thought I'd say this when I haven't even used them yet, RedPower. Having read what it's all about I feel it would be a beneficial MOD and no support for 1.5.2 - hmmm.

I'd never thought a game would cause me this amount of trouble. It is bizarre.

I've read all of the replies so don't feel your comment has gone unread :).

A lot of Redpower2's functions are duplicated or made better by other mods in 1.5.2 other than frames. There are several item sorting and transport systems, Natura recently added a replacement for sickles (though I would think those should go under Tinker's Construct but w/e), Immibis has done a microblocks addon, and powercrystals has done a rednet. Add in all the item processing mods and other than world gen and frames you have almost everything from RP2 and it's up to date.

Most of what RedPower adds has been adopted by other mods - wiring and logic gates - Minefactory Reloaded, Microblocks - immibis Microblocks, Tubes - Applied Energistcs, Infinitubes, Buildcraft\ThermalExpansion, Basalt - Railcraft (Abyssal stone I think its called), Marble - vanilla Quartz, Programming stuff - ComputerCraft, Canvas Bags - Forestry, DartCraft, BetterStorage, Backpacks mod

The only thing that hasn't really been adopted are frames, although apparently Complex Machines is looking to do something in that area. Oh, and no volcanoes.

FTB Ultimate isn't in 1.5 yet. Also, volcanoes rule. I know you can get them from Better Dungeons, but those see hideous. I personally am not going to play FTB without RedPower. It is one of the core mods that I absolutely love.

Biomes O' Plenty has a volcano biome and while it doesn't have basalt it does have its own block type.
