But we don't want to pay for a server as we wont get to play that often. I have a new PC with 16GB ram (tho only a 3.2Ghz Processor). Can I run my pc as the server and still play on it? If not is there any chance my laptop (2.0 Ghz, 4GB ram could possibly work as the server?. THe second question I doubt but its worth asking

Yes, you can use your computer as a server and play on it. I do the same with a couple of friends with a 3.4 Ghz processor and 8 gigs of ram without any performance issues.

You may need to port forward the PC's ip, and setup the configs how you want but that would be the extend of the difficult stuff for you and a friend.

yea!!!!! Well is there a awesome link or something to show me how to do it? take into account I have never set up servers before.

As far as I know its not much different from win 8 to win 7 I do the same things to setup my servers.
Also look into this http://www.noip.com/. This way if anything happens to your IP your friend can still access your server.

They are not OS specific instructions. Even Mac/Windows have the same instructions, except for RAM allocation, and even still there are tutorials for both OS's.

touche. I get annoyed by people who troll for no reason. Its why I generally do not join forums but I was having trouble getting it to work and couldn't find it easily on the mc wiki so I assumed it wasn't there. But anyway... thank you for not being a jerk to a total newb
