Hey, using forestry, thought i'd set up a self-providing biogas engine powering a manual orchard multifarm with walnuts and an accompanying squeezer.

I figured I'd check if the hatch of the multifarm automatically pumped out the walnuts, so I didn't add a wooden pipe to the hatch->squeezer setup.

However, when I eventually powered the engines after the nuts were ready for harvest, I just saw the multifarm fill up with nuts -and at the same time consuming the nuts somehow until there was no nuts left.

-They did not exit the hatch to the squeezer (so confirmed it needed a wooden pipe at least).

Is this some bug or does the orchard actually use the walnuts for something ?

It doesn't, as far as I know, but the hatch does pump out itself, or even drop into a chest below it (note, for these things to happen, the interfaces must be below it).

Could be a bug, is there any other inventory that the nuts might be heading to?

Beautiful thread title...;)

That being said, any regular pipe on the bottom side of the multiblock and connected to a farm hatch should be fine.

I initially hooked up stone transport pipes (no wooden pipe) to the hatch (from the underside), there was no other container the nuts could go to. Since they happily went into the pipes once I added a wooden pipe connecting to the hatch, I can only speculate that, unless they get consumed by the orchard, it bugged up in trying to pump out walnuts to a stone pipe?

I've used that exact build before - an orchard configuration with walnut trees - and I did not encounter any "nut-eating behavior". Any nuts harvested would sit in the farm until I provided a way out. I second angelnc's suggestion, give us a screenshot of your farm's GUI and maintenance area (where your pipes are hooked up).

Summary: nuts disappeared one by one as if they were pumped out before I added a wooden pipe (connected with stone pipe), worked like normal after I put in a wooden pipe.

The picture shows the setup after I added the wooden pipe obviously, just pretend there's no redstone engine and a stone pipe instead of the wooden pipe

I might be wrong, but it looks like your wooden pipe is going into the machine not out of it. Try to hit it with a wrench and see if it works. I know that Iron Pipes now have the filled in end as the way items go.

You do realise the nuts have to ripen on the trees and that takes days and days (minecraft days) once ripe the farm will harvest them and turn them back into unripen fruit. Then it will take several more days for them to ripen again.

Move that hatch to one of the center blocks on the bottom (so only the bottom face is visible) and see if it gravity feeds then.

Gravity feed should work from the edges as well. Something seems off in his build if he needs an engine and wooden pipe if the hatch is on the bottom. He should rebuild the whole thing in a test world, and see if maybe it's something with his modpack and needs to redownload, or something.

I just ran into the same problem last nite. I setup a Manual farm with some beechnut, pecan and 1 cherry.
Since I needed seed oil right away, i took a stack of bonemeal and applied to all the leaves i could reach. I saw the animations of the multifarm harvesting the nuts as I was applying the bonemeal. but when I got done, There were only 4 nuts and 5 cherries. From 64 bonemeal? Seems 50 of my bonemeal was wasted, or something ate 50 of the nuts.

Any clue what I did wrong?

The only time I tried to do an orchard, it didn't work for me, either. I was trying lemons and then limes. I gave up and went back to apples.

However, a "chop 'em down" arboretum will produce a decent amount of seed oil. I have had success with Beech and Cherry in Arboretums. I got a fair amount of seed oil out of those.

In other words, I'm pretty sure orchards are bugged. Try an arboretum instead.

To contribute, I had a chestnut orchard farm and didn't notice anything wrong(I had 4 chestnut trees and the output was too much for a single squeezer).
As for hatches, they will auto eject below them. Or you can use a powered wooden pipe to eject from the sides(it's all very well documented on the official page).
