I'm telling you Hamster (btw are you related to Boo?) if I don't see you set up a villager crew I will be disappointed.

Boo who? (no I'm not crying lol!)

I'll see about that, might be able to fit a type of iron golem farm into the design :)

Miniature Giant Space Hamster Boo.... if you don't know who he is you have missed out on a really good game.

Didn't finish the first layer today like I'd hoped, not enough materials.

I did get power and a stone brick factory built! I think I'll need another 2 igneous extruders & 4 powered furnaces to make any significant amount though..

Does anybody have a suggestion for making good dome-type structures? I need a 301x201 oval shape at the base going up 14 blocks high at the center. That part will be difficult to get to look right, I think..

I just use http://donatstudios.com/PixelCircleGenerator and fudge things a bit. basically I math out each layer one at a time with this and then fill in holes that might be caused.

But I know someone has a CC program for turtles that will build domes for you.

You could use iron tank walls in place of iron blocks. They look very similar with the default texture pack, and are cheaper. It's possible they cause lag when used for decoration though, like the coke oven bricks used to do. I'm not sure if it's been fixed, assuming it can be.

I've used this one recently to make a stretched/oval sphere: http://neil.fraser.name/news/2006/11/17/

If you mess around with the scale values you can generate more blocks along an axis and that in turn will make the sphere more oval in minecraft. So it might look round in the pictures the site generates, but it'll turn out oval if you just count the blocks and ignore that they're not square.
So for example, if you set Y to 0.5 it'll generate a sphere with 2x as many blocks along the Y, which in turn will end up looking like a sphere stretched along the Y axis in minecraft.
Also, if you've got an uneven radius you should turn on the "Centred on block" checks. That way it'll properly generate spheres with a 1 block center instead of a 2x2 center.

I do want to warn you though, it'll get quite laggy and take a while to generate large spheres, so start a bit small and slowly ramp up the radius to see how much it can handle. I really like the way it works though as it gives you a clear plan for every layer and you can customize every aspect of it. Maybe I'll try to find some settings that will generate a sphere to your wanted dimensions ;)

Edit: Ok, the USS Hamster is a bit too big for it to handle xD My browser pretty much crashed trying to create all the images. Maybe if given enough time it would work, but after 5 minutes and tons of pop ups asking me to terminate the script it still wasn't done.

It crashed on me as well..

The turtle won't do ellipses, only spheres.

I've read iron tank components sause lag when not part of a completed tank as the game is always scanning to see if the structure has been completed.

I was thinking about iron cover plates, I can cover 8x the floor space per iron block. That's a definite possibility. I'd still want a solid block outer hull!!

I use Perfect Sphere, creates blueprints of an ellipsoid with given X, Y, Z dimensions. (An ellipsoid with all three dimensions equal is a sphere.) There is no size limit as far as I can tell, I have used it to create a circle with a diameter of 400 blocks once. If you have Gimp, I have written and can share a plugin that will overlay all layers on top of each other with transparency, so you can toggle any level on and off. I find it helpful to only look at the level I'm currently building and the previous one to position everything right.

If you are not hurting for space, you could leave the bottom of your ship mostly flat as a design choice. I remember seeing some starship design from something suitably sci-fi that actually looked pretty cool. The upper hemisphere was oval or teardrop shaped towards the back, while the lower hemisphere was mostly flat, except for some inverted mast-like protrusion. Can't remember where i saw it tho :( .

I'm planning on a "Star Trek" style ship with a saucer section for living space, lower engine hull for machinery, and 2 warp things where I'll put the bulk of my power generation. Going to take me a long time to get there...

Today, I imported my old vanilla world into a Mystcraft age (always planned on doing that). The iron golem farm there will be a huge help, but not nearly enough- I might have to build a few more of them. I also built some IC2 power (solar) and started the groundwork for a new quarry sorting system. I don't want to completely strip my main base so I'm making new machinery. I'll probably end up moving the GT stuff- that's way too annoying to make all new. Some more progress made on the base platform, not as much as I would have liked.

Dude this is really cool. I'm going to enjoy watching it progress. Hoping to start working on my first massive build myself. I'm still learning the mods though and want to be more familiar with them before proceeding with such an ambitious project.

Are you building your ship to look like a real class of Star Trek ship, or just something random? Also, the two warp things are called the Warp Nacelles.

It is my most ambitious minecraft project ever.. Hopefully I can finish it someday :)

It's going to be in the Star Trek style, but not any specific ship. Thanks, I couldn't think of the name, it's been a long time since I watched any ST!

Keep up the good work... btw Saice's hamster reference was from Baulder's Gate. One of the best RPGs ever.
