Hello, I am a relatively new person playing FTB. Right now I am trying to figure out how to make farms. I want to make a wheat farm and I figured out mostly how to do it. I have electrical engines getting power from solar panels that power the combine and farm. The problem I have is: How do I pipe the seeds so that it will go to the farm, but if the farm's full it will go into a chest? I know what a diamond pipe is and how to use it but when I try using a diamond pipe, it doesn't go into the farm first. I've read that it's random but how do I make it so the seeds try to go into the farm first then the chest?

Try using Redpower with Restriction Tubes, it's practically designed for things like this.

I feel like the dumbest FTB player right now. I'm not sure how to do that. I understand how the restriction tube works, but I'm to stupid to figure out how to connect it all together. Could you tell me what should be connecting to what please?

Use a Transposer/Buffer/Some other thing to pull Seeds out of whatever supplies them. Have a normal Tube route going into your farm to supply it with Seeds, and an alternate route, with a Restriction Tube, that Seeds will only take if no other valid places to go exist, which happens if the farm's full.

More questions from me haha. I can't seem to connect a filter (what I use normally to pull stuff out with redpower) or even a transposer directly to a combine. Is this a compatibility issue? To get around this I used a chest connected to the combine directly then a filter connected to the chest which seems to work fine. Also back on topic, I connected pneumatic tube from the filter to the farm but on the last tube, a restriction tube connects to a chest. So the seeds seem to go the the farm and the wheat seems to go to the chests fine. Just curious, does the redpower pipe know the farm isn't supposed to have wheat in it so it sends it down the restriction tube? Is that why the wheat doesn't appear in the farm?

I apologize, but I don't follow the compatibility question, but yes, it probably is a compatibility issue. I've also heard Transposers can convert from Pipes to Tubes (that is, they can accept input from Pipes.)

And, as to the tubes, when you send an item down a tube, it automatically takes a look at all valid destinations in the tube network, and selects the closest one to go to. Restriction pipes count as 1024 blocks long for this purpose, so you'll rarely get anything going down there when other valid locations exist.

Combine doesn't have inventory that other mods can see, however it will output to nearby inventories like chests or relays. I usually used pipes for old forestry farm, they do better job at them. In this situation I'd just put diamond pipe next to the farm with seeds going into farm and no filter going to storage. This way seeds will fill farm, if there will be overflow it will go to storage together with wheat. Redpower also doesn't use special inventories, so it doesn't know about what should go where, the only way to specify it is by sides, you would have to check which side of farm is responsible for what inventory (dirt, sand or seed one). Also old farms (like combine, farm, logger etc.) won't work in 1.5.

It's so simple it's brilliant! I'm feel like a dumba**. As for the redpower side thing, I don't understand that much. Also, why won't the old farms work with 1.5? As well, these farms are old? They seem new to me haha but are there any tutorials for "new" farms?

First of all, you're not stupid or dumb, you're just new and inexperienced. So stop calling yourself that.

As far as the compatibility thing: you're talking about two completely different transport systems: pipes from Buildcraft and pneumatic tubes from Redpower. You can not simply connect these two together, or use machines designed to interact with one system with the other. You always need some sort of a block with an inventory (such as a chest) inbetween. Good automation can however be made with either system, or with a combination of both. I recommend learning about both, as each is useful in some particular situations.

The farms are being replaced by the new configurable multifarms. At some point in the future, the "old" farms (the one you have) will become obsolete and stop working. At that point you can convert your farm to the new farm blocks. But I would recommend experimenting with the multifarms as well, so that you don't get caught unaware when the change hits.

Forestry a couple of version ago introduced new multiblock farms. Here is short overview of them:

And on Forestry wiki: http://forestry.sengir.net/wiki.new/doku.php?id=farms:multi .

Old farms continued to work for a some time (but can be disabled in config), but they aren't ported to 1.5 version of Forestry (http://forestry.sengir.net/wiki.new/doku.php?id=main:beta)

Damn, thank god I didn't make one on my server yet. I've just been testing in creative. I've watched that video some time ago but completely dismissed it. I thought I didn't need it. Thank you for letting me know the loggers etc. won't work with 1.5! It would have sucked to built the farm but have it not work in 1.5. Time to go reserach multiblock farms.

Don't worry about 1.5 that much, it will probably take quite some time for packs to update and your investment in old farms will pay off multiple time. Many other things could also change for 1.5 update.

Ok; I do understand that mods don't just work together smoothly; Thank you for letting me know. I am watching youtube videos and reading the wiki about this rignt now.

Well, the FTB 1.5 update is around 25% done (If I am correct). I would rather go for the multiblock farms so I wouldn't have to rebuild the old ones. Right now I am doing fine on wood, wheat, and food. I'm not too worried. Also what else could change in FTB that would impact me a lot?

It's not really a matter of working together smoothly or not. It's two different sets of tools, although used for a similar purpose.

Both a mop and a vacuum can be used to clean your floor. But ducttaping one to the other won't make them work together smoothly. That doesn't mean there is any incompatibility, they're just different tools.

Nice simile. Haha.
