I'll preface this by telling you I'm completely new to using mods/launchers/etc. of any type, I usually just play vanilla minecraft. Also I have a pretty slow computer by today's standards. I thought because of this feed the beast would cause it to be so laggy it would be unplayable but this isn't the case. It's slightly laggy when placing blocks and such causing me to place two sometimes and the normal symptoms of a slight performance issue.

Do you guys have any tips on reducing this lag? This looks extremely fun and I'd like to get into it. I already play on normal distance, power saver, and fast graphics.

Well, make sure you always have the most up to date version of the launcher and your Java. As long as you have a 64 bit operating system and are using 64 bit Java, you can allocate more RAM in the options tab of the launcher.
I always recommend not running anything memory intensive in the back ground. Such as Sykpe, Teamspeak, Steam, etc. Also, if you have a browser open, make sure you don't go crazy with the tabs and windows.
If you plan on playing on a server, try not to play when others in your household are doing internet intensive stuff (streaming, Netflix, CoD, etc.)

Hope it helps :)

If you haven't already, you can try installing optifine -- it's a mod designed to make minecraft more playable on older computers. There's a sticky on how to install optifine on this forum in tech support. It has about a million settings and most of them I have no idea what they do, but maybe google will help you find some guides on the best optifine settings for performance.

I don't suggest this as there are a few versions out there presently, and they have been known to cause issues with players.

I've personally helped in several cases where OptiFine was the culprit of their inability to play

Oh really? That's annoying, it really helps a lot for me. It is buggy sometimes though and I would suspect it would probably not work with some hardware. Maybe with a "this may render FTB unable to run or crash a lot, and if so, uninstall it" disclaimer?

It's not in the modpack right now for a reason :p

For some reason in the forge build for 1.3.2, optifine and forge compatability broke, making it even MORE laggy than without it. Don't use it.

Oh so optifine doesn't help? Hmm. I already run no other processes and have the maximum ram set. Maybe any suggestions on a mod to disable that causes the most performance issues with the least added features? Thanks for all the help guys. :D

I'm guessing we're talking fps here.

Yesterday, my girlfriend noticed a severe drop in her fps. From 60 to 20. We're not sure what caused it, but it appeared to have taken place after the 1.0.6 update. When we looked into it further, we noticed the version she was using of Java was Java 64bit Version 7 Update 1. I was using Update 9. She did a complete java reinstall to the latest version and her fps doubled without even putting optifine on.

The moral? Always keep your Java up to date.

Optifine helps a LOT.
I dropboxed the version that works well with FTB. Here's the link.

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
Here's a few tips I found;

Turn off mystcraft instability by config (unstable ages can lag a lot)

Make sure your pipe networks are not dropping items/having an excessive build up (entity lag)

Run one massive quarry instead of 2 smaller ones.

Keep chunkloading blocks to a minimun (world anchor, quarry ect)
-Flowing water in your quarry holes also cause lag (never confirmed this myself, but enough servers admins as whined at me)

Add a kill switch to all your contraptions, so you can switch off when not using them.
-Any machine that has a lot of block updates will cause lag (BC pump from inf. source, cobble gens ect)

Crystal chests (just the glass ones, not the mod) lag your client a lot- stick to diamond ones.

Large forcefields will lag when generating/shutting down.

Keep auto-breeding farms under control.

Dont set off nukes/crazy amounts of explosive/dig holes with the filler/laser without picking the drops (again entity lag)

Also set graphics to fast, and reduce your render/view distance.

When redpower is released, use tubes instead of pipes (better routing, no dropping stuff, less lag), and use regulators to combine stuff into stacks (like dirt/cobble from the quarry)

Enable cheats so you can turn off the rain.

You'll have to remember, as with any vanilla or modded world, the bigger you build the laggier it'll get.
(even making pretty things in creative will cause this)

Also turn off other software when playing to free up CPU.

I am using optifine myself and it's much less laggy with optifine than without it. But I have a high end machine. It's just my graphics card that's ancient. I know it makes minecraft use 120% of my CPU (100% of one core, 20% of another core) and it makes my fan spin something crazy. And I may be using the version of optifine Wabbit is using. Like I said before optifine can be buggy, I've certainly seen cases in the past where using it slowed down minecraft. So it can be hit and miss.

I wonder if there's other optimization mods other than optifine that might do a decent job but have better compatibility with forge? Slowpoke did mention several times that optifine wasn't the only mod that could do that job. But I never heard him say exactly what those other mods were.

Run one massive quarry instead of 2 smaller ones.

As a server admin, I have to say that I've had someone make a massive quarry before and it's turned out to be irrevocably laggier than even 4 quarries of a half the size each.

I'd restrict quarry usage to a 20x20 maximum size and 2 per person at most. And that's generous.

I had a quarry that accidently carved out the bottom of a river. This was a serious lag feast for me. I had to reduce all my graphics settings to minimum, switch to default texture pack, and slowly, painfully, block up the hole in the river. Once that was done, lag vanished.
It's the multiple flowing water source blocks in an area that cause the problem. While having water in them is great for dealing with lava, you are better off keeping your quarries dry.

The other thing that seems to lag my computer up are the redwood and tall fir forests from Extra Biomes. I've personally disabled them from being generated.

sorry for bumbing but... Lagging when breaking / placing single blocks is caused by Advanced openGL, turn it off

also "multi-core" chunk loading... bugged atm

IMO: FTB team should look into this "lagging issue" and determine what is cousing that. is it optifine, or some unconfirmed memory-leak or one of mod bugs or maby something else :/

its annoing when there are insane FPS drops on fresh map with no contraptions whatsoever...

I used to be able to integrate the modpacks into my original .minecraft and that fixed the lag right away, but the latest mindcrack pack won't allow that... I get a Null error.

Had this same problem with the Tekkit launcher.
