In the days when we were new, there was magic in all things. People of many cultures and beliefs thought that there were spirits that lived in and worked in partnership with trees. Growing as the tree grew and protecting the tree while it sheltered them. A tree without a spirit was less then one with it. A spirit without a tree was almost nothing.

In Minecraft we can look at things with new eyes, and see things again with a creative view. It's no shock that the idea of a tree spirit as a Minecraft challenge has come and gone a number of times. There are those who wrote the first rules, and some who even wrote a mod to help. To this day there are those who are maintaining a set of command blocks to help.

Today it is my turn. I've put together magic mods with nature themed mods and only the simplest and least dangerous forms of tech. Light, and life is precious. Resources above ground are many and easily collected from leaves, trees, and even the grass. As the roots grow into the earth the metal is rare and hard to find, much protected, but bringing even a little to the surface lets you access more and more of the solutions I've given you. At first you only have the most basic tools made of wood clay and mud. With time you will have a mighty tree, glowing with many kinds of energy and protected by a network of totems and guardians as you grow into a mighty magical being yourself.

Against you are waves and waves of monsters, the turn of seasons, and the need to keep yourself protected against land, see and air. You'll be attacked by waves of monsters, some of them kinds not seen before. The turn of the seasons will cover the land with snow and storms. Your own life is limited and hunger is always a danger.

0.0.0 Complete rebuild for 1.12.2 ... mods not entirely sorted out. A few are redundant. Configuration needs refinement.
0.0.1 modlist finalized. Permissions being asked for the ones that need additional permissions to be used on the retro launcher. Curse version up within 48 hours.
0.0.2. Engineer's workshop reborn removed, Engineer's workshop in. I know I thought I was done too.
0.0.3 Cleaned up a LOT of mods, changed a lot of mods to get closer to the core idea. I've got to settle down and stop editing the list so I can actually get the world done. Means I had to redo my scripting too, oh well.
0.0.4. Modlist Finally Sorted. Every time I stop and look there's something new that looks good. Instead I trimmed and trimmed and trimmed. I think I've got it down to the living end.

Pack modlist is stable. Configurations are not. Item recipes need a lot of tweaking in the early game. Repairs will be made. Updates will be made. Wish me luck folks.

1. Grow the world tree. You are linked to the chosen tree once you've begun. You can take no action while you are separated from your tree. Not one block broken or placed. Not one tool used or sword swung. If you die before you can return to the touch of the tree, you die. You should never be out of reach of the tree, save accident or the briefest movement to collect drops.
2. The tree can only grow from itself. This tree will accept no log from any other tree not of it's linage. The saplings from this tree you will grow and spread and harvest to grow the tree. Up into the air and down into the earth with vast spreading roots. With these roots you go into the earth and across the world to collect what you need.
3. Start anywhere in the world, use any one sapling, use creative to get the sapling if you need to. All blocks that are part of the tree must touch as a single structure. No leapfrog stepping stones.
4. Any space within the tree, surrounded on all sides by the logs and body of your tree is within reach of the tree, even if you where to make a space too large to touch a wall. In such a room you might build a portal. Through such a link the tree might spread to other worlds.
5. The "Heart" of the tree. The bottom most log of the original grandfather tree. This block is special. If it is lost, the tree is lost. You may exchange this log for another block to make it distinct, as long as the block is fragile. No obsidian. No witherproof block. Bedrock is right out. Try glowstone.
6. In a perfect world, once you where out of contact with your tree you would trigger a few seconds of count down before you went into spectator mode. Sadly this isn't a perfect world and thus cheats stay enabled so that you can do this yourself.

Playing as a tree spirit is not required but suggested for the thematic feeling of the pack. Any guide for the pack will assume you are using this in the challenge.

I'm looking for people who are not afraid to break things, and in the most interesting ways. Find the cheats, find the exploits, find the glitches and holes. Tell me what I've done wrong. Be brutal.

I'm also looking for people who are awesome, and willing to make this pack look good. I want amazing things, beautiful pictures, and trees that fill the sky.


I like to let a picture be my stunning introduction.



A lonely island in the middle of nowhere, is a bit of a strange start, but I'm lucky, this isn't the seed I'm using for anything. But is is a nice, lonely, quiet place to sit and show what changes I've put in place, and help everybody get started.

Firstly, lets mention the start. Cheats on. Chest on. Biomes O plenty custom world (Temperature:latitude). That starting chest is going to be important, not just now, but until I can get HQM setup. Feel free to spend a little time in creative and read through JEI and the books. First night is going to blood moon no matter what, no shame in skipping it or creative through it.



Now, in the starting inventory is a book that instructs you on the basics of Druidry, how to live with trees without having to cut them down. Course, you can ignore that. You can toss the book into lava if that's the best use you have for it. The very first change I've made is to make sure that you can craft one of these yourself if you need one latter, perhaps due to an unfortunate demise.

You craft it from any sapling and a piece of paper. Course, paper isn't going to be terribly easy, except that you can make it with rice, not just sugar cane.



(Not implimented, yet, rice seeds from bonemeal tall grass, rewrite next version)

Next up. I am not encouraging the burning of fuel in order to get results. This includes canola and it's forms of enriched oils. To this end I've attempted to completely eradicate the canola seed from the world. This required a small change in crafting a certain manual. Coffee, as essential to life as thought, and a worthy replacement.

With clay buckets, thanks to ceramics, there has to be a small change to teacups in order for flower tea to be able to be in the pack. The unfired ceramic clay is a simple mixture of bonemeal and clay and produces a finer result then you'd have gotten with regular clay anyawy. A nice delicate teacup.

This becomes a lovely cup with a bit more work, and with that you can have some lovely tea. There will be many times you'll be glad for a cuppa.



Not every change is for the sake of pure compatibility, sometimes it's just to reduce redundancy. I'm really looking forward to seeing folks in nice sets of obsidian plated and reinforced armor. In order to get that though, there was also sets of tools that came with it.



Now, so as to not skimp on the lovely things added by actually additions, I've made sure that you can craft the AIOT out of every set of tools, even these more exotic emerald and obsidian ones. This does lead to a slightly more expensive set of tools then you might have expected, but it does have many uses.



As these obsidian tools are worked with handles made from blaze rods.

Now, not every change in this pack makes things nicer. No, I admit I've been evil.



When you craft a torch, it's not going to be lit. You get unlit torches from sticks and (char)coal. Still, you can use these for something.

I'm not going to force you to go to the ends of the earth to lite the torches. Make them into Totem's and watch them come to life.




If you want something a bit easier to carry, your going to need to light the torches. That means making a "matchbook" or a flint and steel.



The good news is, this is simple enough to make. The bad news is, it will wear out, eventually. Worse, the torches will also burn out eventually. This means having to light them again. Such a high maintenance lifestyle just to keep away the dark. The deadly, deadly darkness.



Now, if you want those torches to not burn out, you'll need to protect them. Either with a bit of salt, if you get lucky enough to start near salt, or you dig out enough to start farming it, you'll be able to make a nice salt lamp.



On the other hand, eventually you'll be able to harvest some seeds from the grasses of the earth. Easy enough to grow a pumpkin. Works just as well as anything else to protect the flickering flames of a torch. It's not the right season to really want jack o'lanterns around, but when you must...



Now, having gotten this far, seeing what I've done, you might want to look for another way to make light. Ars Magica does have a spell for that. To get started for that you'll need an inscription table. I've taken the liberty of allowing one of these lesser torches to serve as the lightsource on this table for the important work of inscribing the spell.



For all that the island seems empty, there is enough there to get a good start. Everybody knows that birds are attracted to shiny things sometimes. Check a few bird's nests and you might discover a flake or two of glowstone that they've picked up. There's a few other things you might find useful in them, keep checking the trees.

With that first glowstone you might just craft one of these fancy lanterns, if you can spare the iron.



Though if you have a certain attachment to the classic torch, I've not removed it from your reach. Though to get an everburning flame, you must think like an ever glowing lamp. The first step is to craft 4 of the glowstone to infuse it into the char(coal).



Then that can be crafted into the torches that you are so fond of from before you where here, doing this. Torches that will never burn out. A relic of the past. These are also the torches that you can find in the world. So if you take a mind to loot the villagers... do remember that you've been given up to 4 of these miracle torches from around the bonus chest at the start.



Lastly, let me point to the briefly truncated life meter you have. If you thought to pick the hard way, you are down to the Zelda three hearts. Perhaps you are taking it easy, then then you only have 7, you need three.

Tough as Nails gives you the Lifeblood Crystal. I've made the ingredients for it ones you can get early, but I've also tried to make them things you've never seen before.

As a small challenge, I'd like to see who's first to post a picture of themselves crafting one of these crystals. Show me that you can riddle out how to get every one of the parts. In theory you could do this without even smelting a single ore.

The tree spirit challenge is optional with this pack, but I do encourage it. Without it it's a nature themed magic pack, and it still plays rather well.

Post Merges:

Item 1, Looks like we've got confirmation that you can be killed by flung blocks by weather.
Item 2, will have to include "deflector" into the quest book someday.
Item 3, if your base is in am ember chunk, you will have a bad time due to the lasers being able to hit you through blocks from the Ember Golems.
Item 4, if you miss WAYLA, use "the one probe", will have to include note in quest book.
Item 5, if any helmets don't function with a probe attached, let me know, there's a whitelist.
Item 6, I've tweaked blood moon spawnrates and limits. Let me know if there's still lag.
Item 7, I've Tweaked Zombie Awareness, slightly less aggressive, slightly easier on your systems.
Item 8, Same Name on Curse. I'm open for feedback there too.
item 9, Ars Magica 2 does not require you to find the essence or craft a book (And leather isn't required for books either), but it isn't easy without a guide. Might put hints into the HQM book too.

Wow, prepare to die is right. Great work, so much potential.

I had a weird incident, night was about to hit so I started to run back to my cry hole, all of a sudden everything turned black and I was suffocating. Just before this my co-ords would have been about 220, 74, 80 but my death marker ended up at 0,74,0. Nowhere near where I was when the glitch happened.

Here is an extract from latest.log when it happened, there are tonnes of weather2.moving lines just before this, like 100's and 100's of them.

I have turned better foliage off now. The lag still happens, it seems to happen either with a major weather event or dying during/after a blood moon. I am not exactly sure which as both events have been happening at around the same time. The pack is very difficult, it seems even harder on easy than on normal. I would suggest dialing down the ancient gollem s if you can, they range shot you through blocks that should be solid, then if they get through your defensive line they have so much health that you end up in the spawn/death cycle. Almost every death I have had has been from them. I very nice pack, it seems harder than B'n'B even without hunger overhaul. Doing the tree spirit challenge adds another level to the game, what a great concept. Waila would be nice, sometimes you have to mine a block before you know what it is, like the white sand for example. I have now gone through 5 worlds trying to get a tree setup, I almost got around to starting a mine in the last world, then the cyclone came, ripped down my palisade wall and let the witches and ancient gollums in, I rage quit after the 10th death :p

The One Probe, so that is what that mod is for, sorry I have never even looked into it. I will have another go and see if I can live longer than a week. Great fun, excelent work.

Ah, that explains a lot. Those gollems are nasty and your are right, the random number generator in this pack does not like me.

I now have a base with my tree growing, I even have a mine and a farm!. I have experienced the water creepers several times. In my last world I moved from a desert biome to a swamp biome after a cyclone destroyed my house. I had a small farm at the rivers edge with a room carved into the side of the bank. A blood moon brought an ogre which just ripped everything apart, as I tried to attack it a group of water creepers decided that now was a good time to blow up. That was the end of that world.

I am about to try and start Ars Magica 2, I love the light spell that has which should allow me to stand on the top of the tree and expand the lit areas around my base. I just have to get into Actually Additions first to turn some zombie flesh into leather for the book.

I am still experiencing serious lag that seems to happen over time, quiting the game and loading the world seems to fix it, I may just need to give Java some more memory, currently I have it set with 4.5G. I will try giving it more today and see if that helps, hopefully I can find a sweet spot.

I also need to take the time to go through the entire modlist and get up to speed on the mods that are new to me, like The One Probe. The good news is that I got some nether quartz from killing something so the probe is on my list of tools to create.

This is a great pack, it is hard but once you get a foothold things get a bit easier. Easy access to food is great, I need to go through the list of foods as I am currently living on cooked corn, it works but is not ideal. I will look at getting some screenshots as soon as my tree is in a presentable state, although I am dreading the day a cyclone comes through and removes all the leaves.

The number of really easy starting foods, even if it's just jerky from meat, or seeds roasted on the campfire means that even before the first stone there's so many options for food to make things easy.

That's why I'm able to make things harder on you at the start.

I'm not entirely sure if the simulated nights actually allows fairies to spawn. This is going to need testing with it disabled. Maybe I can catch the author of Druidry with a few spare minutes and get them to explain how I should be getting fairy dust... or if I can't, perhaps I'll force a way to craft it.

I've removed the switchbow and bullseye in favour of the turrets. It's a little off theme, but I can deal with it.

I've swapped in base metals. I hope it plays nice with rockhound and TiCo. It does mean that worldgen and fixing worldgen is going to just be THAT much simpler.

I think I'm going to want to increase the overall amount of documentation, there's a number of books that don't need to be crafted in order to make and use bits in the mod, and some sneaky little features new in 1.10.2 in even the more well known mods.

If nothing else, I've adjusted things so that the sudden death "gotcha" moments will not be quite as lethal now. Though, I've done that TWICE before, and then something new becomes instant death.

Another round of testing, time for some pictures to show off some of what's here, what you might do, and what you might not have expected.

Because I can't resist playing what I test, (and why should I, it's like tasting as you cook), I fired up a world, picked a rather pretty spot with a VERY large oak tree and settled in. Died 3 times just in clearing the tree, and thus made up my mind to nerf the tree spirits. With just one tree worth of wood to start, it's possible to make a base, and have a nice view. A bit of a mistake. A nice view of the water means a LOT of storms.




On the other hand, built slightly up into the air meant that I had a basement that I didn't have to dig, and my heartwood (replaced with chiseled glowstone) wouldn't be trivially destroyed by a creeper wandering in my front door. The downside? Bloodmoon reinforced zombie swarms finally being able to path to me and making it a BIT hard to make that first floor.



This produced my first absolutely secure room. Well, "absolutely" you know zombies and wooden doors. But all exits are sealable. Doors, and a hatch on the up. All walls are log, as is the floor and roof. This is "inside" by the rules, and I wouldn't need to keep touch with the logs anymore.



As for outside. You might want to garden outside. One of the terrifying ambushes comes from harvesting your garden. Course, outside has it's own dangers too. This little garden blew up from a aqua creeper even without my standing there. I suspect they take damage from being out of the water and explode when out of HP. There went my garden. Whoops.



Also, the turn of the seasons has predictable effects on the water. Though as you can see, smart (read: Lucky) biome group choice lead to just a little bit of ice. Course this was still cold enough that even indoor crops tended to die before they could be harvested. If you pick a spot that's in the dangerous frozen parts of the world, be aware. And love bonemeal.



On the other hand, wolf packs are quite willing to be tamed, and help now. A good reason to maybe be near a vast and frozen forest. Though if you want them to last longer then my test subject, you might make some armor for them. If nothing else the chest means you can store food to heal them. The update that will give them graves to hold the chest contents and possibly be revived is on the way.



Bonemeal, as of yet, does not give you everything, (I'm working on it) but it does give the all important answer to "where do I get ender eyes?" and many other questions.



Sadly, it ALSO answers "What's going to try to kill me tonight Brain?" Don't worry, these are slightly beneficial. Run away, leave them in your garden and the garden will grow faster. You'll just have to fight it to get back into it. So, beneficial to the garden, to your health, less so.



So, knowing that at any moment your garden could be home to death, no reason to keep it inside my home. Outside my home is a hundred kinds of death. So I compromised at a walled garden that I built around an underground "fresh water" lake.



I said I'd show some unpredictable things. How about a cow that landed out of the sky? A weather event picked it up and it just happened to land right inside of my base. This meant I had bowls of milk, and from them cheese to make cheesy potatoes. It should (Should?) also produce fairy's attracted to the milk bowls on the ground, to get the fairy dust for the heart.



Another random storm event landed a block of slimey dirt with the slime grass intact right there next to my base. I turned it into a bit of a hobby to make paths out over that way, dig some of the grass into dirt, remove my path, and let the slime grass grow and spread onto the dirt. Why? Because even paint drying, and watching grass grow can be fun in minecraft.



A bit of work... okay, quite a bit of work, and there's a safe passage under the treefarm above, down and around the underground lake. The floor of logs is in place. More logs under the glowstone. Then a simple matter of building up the walls and across the roof, leaving enough space for 3 tall crops and a lot of light.



And here is the second enclosed tree chamber. This makes it within the rules to simply walk across the dirt to do my harvesting. Or to flee in panic away from the avenging spirit that awoke from my crops. One or the other. As you can see, the diagonal does count, but if I really wanted this to look as good as possible, I'd make a pass with barkifier and change some of the logs into better looking all bark sided logs.



One last little tip from today's work, something to look at while the upload, confirm, and push happens.



Yes, that's a drying rack.
Yes, that's leather.
Those used to be fish, cooked fish.
Sticks, and string. Just a few bird nests and you can fish for your leather.

Biomes O' Plenty scythes act strange. I have tested wood and stone so far and both behave the same, they seem to self repair and sometimes when they break they can come back. Sometimes when they break your empty hand still acts like it is holding the tool. I am pretty sure I have even seen them duplicate in my inventory. Let me know if you need log files or anything. It is pretty easy to reproduce though.

I think I know some of what's going on there. I /think/ those only actually lose durability when you break leaves with them.

Okay, death by creeper, completely lost my base ... (twice) ... and a death by golems. I'm not experiencing them seeing me through walls, but I didn't survive long enough to make non dirt walls.

Zombies could seem to track me through 1 thick log walls if I could see between the logs...

I'm starting to suspect something.

Wolf respawn deactivated. When it gets over 100, it's time to trim things.

I've not even seen a skeleton this entire run, far too many zombies. Going to have to investigate that.

On the other hand, with the insane troubles that it would take to get to an end portal, I've added... cake.

If I disable ores from other mods, how much to increase base metal ore by... *ponder* Or, do I leave the others, assuming mod authors know how much is needed in the mod they made...

I think I'm going to copy beyond just a little bit more.

Going to disable worldgen of ET stones. Hardened is craftable... just have to make sure the assembler can be made with hardened (or if it can't, add it)... Might also add back quark's diorite, to make roots earlier. Small patches are easier to find then huge rare veins.

Okay, update from uncrafting table fixes a trouble I had with it, and adds leather strips... I'm adding a recipie to make them into leather.

Hrm. Looks like this is enough changes, I better get pictures up and update.

Okay, I made some changes. I tinkered. I tried starting over a few times. I used the same wood and same base design each time to keep the pictures as consistent as possible.

This still isn't a story.

But, if it WAS a story, it would start here.



A slime island, a few lakes, witchwood, cows, sheep, and even some of the better flowers for eating. It also just happens to be right there at the spawn, so much better for running back each death. Lots, and lots, of deaths. I also had to restart many times, due to explosions.



Before, I built a wall, perched up high on an isolated cliff, and protected myself the best I could. It meant I only needed to defend on one side. I was able to grow up and out faster then I grew down that time.

This time, I had to dig down. The classic cryhole.



This time, I was lucky. Worked my way down, and before I was overwhelmed (okay, I was three or four times), I found an underground lake. This meant fish, and crops. With a little luck, and the preventative measure of making sure that the water was only 1 deep, it was possible to make a foothold here.

May you be just as lucky.



Now, while using logs to step down is good for starting, turning it into a dropshaft makes things faster, and makes logs go farther. The literal ascension mod gives ways way more efficient then making ladders.



There might be much discussion (or not) about what the best use of the oh so scarce materials you can access early just happens to be. This is my go to. Zombie iron, or perhaps a shallow ore, the knife from totemic.

Pick anything you like, but you will want the ocelot in one of the levels. There is little more wonderful then watching a creeper FAIL to explode.



The first big try, the world was so dangerous, that even with the protective walls, and the safe edge, I needed to keep my farm inside strong walls to survive. This time the grandfather tree has many, many other trees growing from it. I'm taking this as a sign that I might have edged towards too easy again. I will see what you folks think of it.



I suspect that the ability to have all the guide books will be the end of the tutorial section of the quest book, when I make it.



Yes, I still have seasons activated. This attempt was a bit further from the warm regions, so there's snow on the ground, and not just a bit of ice in the water. Combined with the storms, there's a few odd things that happen. Personally, I like it, you can never know what's going to quite happen when you combine mods.



A few more generations of tree, another turn of the seasons, the forest is huge, and the roots passed down into that cave that was conveniently close to the start. Now that there's enough logs to make shelter and roots and enough additional supplies to keep you alive while in those caves. Metal, if only in the least amounts.



That lake easily becomes that first early garden I like, this one is smaller, but still enclosed. Course, without the warmer there's only crops in a few of the seasons.



On top of that goes a bit more forest. This is the pattern that I setup for the rest of my run. Harvest trees. Build up. Build out. Grow more trees.



Ah. April Fools. Yes, that is a tornado. Yes, those are chickens. This is also the day my friend died. Sorry for the delay. I'd like to say I threw myself into my work. No, I threw myself into my play. Still, things did get done. 8 iron, 4 gold, 5 redstone, give or take, that's a storm deflector. That tornado did not reach me.



This time, I only got this far in botania. 3 of the 5 basic runes. No mushroom, no earth rune. Didn't go into the nether, no netherbrick. Still, this provided useful tools.



To progress further in roots would have meant more time with bonemeal and luck to get the right flowers. A lot more exploration to find a birch tree and a jungle tree, or a blaze rod...

... more stones would have meant nether brick. Still, a basic setup can do quite a bit. The basic spells and a basic staff gives you powerful spells... you'll just need to use the drops from some of the rare monsters to get there.



At this point the central point was 200 blocks up, and down to the bedrock. The next layer out was hardly started. There's a third shell in the planning stages. Around them the 4 wings with the 4 forests over them.

As that goes down it can expand further and further out, roots go deep.



Deep down to lava. With it's own dangers. Including monsters that spit fire to burn the roots.



Down there is also the key to making all resources unlimited.



Ember. It needs to be down at the bedrock.



For demonstration I took this as far as making dawnstone. Could have taken ember further, if I'd wanted to spend the time, to move the dill head a few times. I'm starting to really enjoy the stone deep nature of embers, even with it being one of the oddball mods that does not quite fit, it really is something nice. I'd rather the pipes from this, instead of the ones from ExU, given half a chance.



Next room over, and there's tinker's construct. These two mods mean that the metal you've got is worth twice as much and you can start pushing forward big time. This also means that it's a stopping point, at least for this demonstration.

The late game when you are a walking god does not need testing. Back to the early game for me again, and perhaps for us all.

This is a weird pack. And an interesting challenge. I might check it out once a quest book is done, or the mod list gets stable.
