That only works for actual books, leather is a needed resource in both mods regardless.
Unless you know of a way to take a book and get leather from it...(which I do, as an aside)
Uncrafting table. And thaumcrafts most important items do not need leather

This is one of the reasons I like DartCraft, force shears can get leather and feathers without killing the animal.
What does it look like when you shear it?Slightly disturbing to think about shearing a living cow for leather though.

Also they moo really depressingly after that.
PC vanilla magic needs leather for books/bookcases. Thaumcraft also uses leather for various things, starting with not just the Thaumonomicon but the Goggles too.

If you don't like that there's always various rotten flesh to leather mods.

If you want a good rotten-flesh to leather recipe, Thaumic Exploration has you covered with an alchemical recipe.
Don't mob farms count? You're technically getting materials so that you can make stuff, but you won't participate in the killing. More of a loophole than anything else though.
It's their rules... but I don't think they do mob farms, in fact they're usually nomadic. (Which is probably lots more fun since 1.7!)
