Actually, there are lego specific stores where you CAN go buy individual blocks, and shops at the various Legolands in existence (one in San Diego Ca. and I think one in Denmark at least)... I don't know if they are actually sold one at a time but you can get minimal packs of say 10 red 8-post blocks, but your point is well made and taken in the spirit intended. :D
